We selected Thomas Custom Builders (TCB) to renovate our home because of their high level of interest in us, our home and our project. In the planning phase, TCB leveraged their architects, suppliers, trades people, and costing and scheduling team to ensure our project would proceed smoothly. TCB sent the suppliers and trades (electricians, plumbers, flooring, interior design, drywall and painters, roofers, countertop and cabinetry, carpenters, siding) people to our home to make additional notes before construction started. In the construction phase, the TCB supervisors were there to manage our project on a day to day basis to ensure the project stayed on schedule. The materials (e.g. cabinets, faucets, flooring) arrived on time. The TCB trades showed up promptly everyday. Their craftsmanship was excellent and fast. Doorways were sealed to confine dust to the work areas. Countertops, stained floors and carpets were also covered for protection. The kitchen and laundry room were always available for us to use at the end of the day. TCB (the company, the suppliers, the trades, TCB management) proved incredible from all aspects; they started and finished the project on time, under cost, and with great craftsmanship and an incredible can-do attitude.

Thomas Custom Builders recently remodeled our basement. We had originally hired them to remodel our master bath but when COVID his we shifted our focus. They had no problem with the change and quickly designed our basement for secondary living and room for extended guest stays. We truly appreciated the professionalism, workmanship and, above all, cleanliness of the TCB team. They went above and beyond to clean up each and every day. They wore masks and kept their distance from our family. They fielded questions from subcontractors so we didn't have to be unnecessarily exposed. The space itself turned out beautifully and has already proved invaluable. When our teen was recently exposed to COVID he was able to very comfortably isolate until he received his negative diagnosis. We had a wonderful experience working with Thomas Custom Builders (TCB) from start to finish on our home addition. We added a master bed and bath, unfinished basement, and screened in porch. First and foremost, we went with TCB for this renovation because we felt like they provided high quality services at a competitive price. We felt very comfortable undertaking a big project like this with TCB because unlike some of the other builders and architects we met, TCB listened to our ideas and concerns and helped us to visualize exactly what we need in a renovation and within our budget. They worked with us patiently through changes in ideas and scale of the project. Then throughout the actual renovation, the TCB staff were amazing. Brian was onsite the entire time, overseeing every aspect of the project, with absolutely no issues. It was great to have the same person there every day and it was very clear that he knew exactly what he was doing and what we wanted/needed. Work was always done within a reasonable time frame and with high quality. The TCB team finished everything within 3 months, which was even faster than we had even anticipated. We would absolutely recommend TCB to our family, friends, and neighbors and use them again.

From all the TCB staff to all of their sub-contractors, the products and workmanship we received were top-notched. I would highly recommend Thomas Custom Builders. They completed a substantial upgrade for us, renovating our kitchen and great room as well as adding a second story with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and a laundry room. From the start they were excellent to work with. their architect took our ideas and quickly put together a very workable plan. The builders themselves went above and beyond to ensure the construction was of high quality. they worked with us throughout the process and were very accessible and accommodating. Most importantly, they finished on schedule (less than 5 months total) and on budget.

Working with Thomas Custom Builders was an exceptional experience. They tore down our old sun porch and added on a family room in its place. We also had them remodel our kitchen and downstairs bath, paint the first floor, and refinish our hardwood floors. You hear horror stories of contractors taking forever to complete work or not finishing the project or not delivering what you expected. I had absolutely none of these issues and the contractor was always available to answer my questions. When I pointed out minor details that weren't quite what I wanted, they fixed them right away. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for any work. I can't wait for them to do more work for me in the future.

If you are contemplating home renovations, Thomas Custom Builders is absolutely the professional team you want for the project – guaranteed! It’s difficult to know where to begin because I simply could not have been more impressed with every aspect of how this project came together—not just the obvious stuff, like the strictly top shelf skills, craftsmanship and attention to detail demonstrated by the crews, but the courtesy and professionalism from literally every member of Thomas Custom Builders that interacted with me or my family—from the owner who sat at my dining room table to make sure he understood exactly what we were looking for before the project began, to every member of his team. First, as to the design process, we’ve owned our house for almost 18 years, and we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted the improvement to look like when we sat down with the foreman and a few of his folks. They listened patiently, offered some “on the spot” suggestions, took lots of notes about the things that were important to us (like a larger bathroom… two sinks… more closet space…) and then said they’d be back in a week or so with some plan proposals. What they came back with was simply outstanding, and way better than what we had come up with on our own. It met every single objective we articulated, and—more importantly—did so in a way that was really beautiful and made way better use of the available space. We are absolutely delighted with the design! Second, these guys stick to an aggressive schedule! They went from “first contact” with us around our living room table to our final acceptance and payment on the completed project (a major two-story renovation/extension—added huge master bath w/custom tile work & Jacuzzi) in the time it took our neighbors to have about half of their kitchen renovation done. I was doubtful at the initial timeline they gave us, but much to my surprise, and quite frankly, disbelief, they stuck to it religiously. Third, and there’s no real delicate way to say this, so I’m just going say it: I felt completely comfortable with the Thomas crew having unfettered access to my home—whether we were there or not. They were courteous, polite, patient, kind, and so very respectful of our belongings—and even our pet! On more than one occasion, when they were cleaning up the work site at the end of a day (which they also did EVERY DAY), they’d go the “extra mile” to ensure there were no holes or debris that might present a hazard to our little dog. The prospect of being out of town with workmen having access to your home, family, kids etc., could be a little unnerving – it never ever was, not even for a second with the Thomas team. There’s an unmistakable dedication to values and courtesy that you just don’t seem to find anymore that they brought to work every single day, throughout the entire project. Fourth, they are no-kidding professionals! On two occasions, the foreman had subcontractors come back to re-accomplish tasks that didn’t meet his standard of excellence and he, himself, spent half a day doing trim work to make double certain we were happy with the final product. On another occasion he had some tile work re-done when my wife and I hadn’t even noticed the tiny imperfection that immediately caught his eye when he was inspecting the sub’s work. He apologized for the slight delay the re-work would cause, assured us the expense of the re-work would be on them, and explained his rationale: “We don’t just want you to be happy with how it looks when we’re done with the job, we want you to be happy with it ten or fifteen years from now.” I’m not kidding or exaggerating…. they’re really that good. There’s quite a bit more I could say, but hopefully you get the idea: If you’re contemplating a home improvement project—and ours was fairly major—don’t make any decisions until you talk with Thomas Custom Builders. You’ll be so very glad you did!

Thomas built a second-floor master bedroom suite, which required that the slanted ceiling of the room below it be removed. They were great about isolating the area while the roof was off and before the room above had been finished, and still allowed me access to the rest of the first floor. The bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet are as planned and certainly appear well built. Very reliable - they came every day except for a snow day or two and finished early. Having one foreman present almost all the way through the project made things go smoothly. Costs were as promised, and their personnel were all helpful, pleasant, and dedicated. The heating/cooling system is a bit of a disappointment, as are two things about the roof, but perhaps I should have been more vigilant as the project was built, at least as far as the first is concerned.

A very professional group! The work was started with a solid contract and clear understanding of the project. Experts were consulted in areas where necessary - an architect, who drew the plan and a landscape designer, who addressed a water issue and made recommendations for plantings. Workers were on time, worked all day and finished as planned. Rick was in touch with me when I called and every question/problem was solved without a hitch. Some changes were suggested and implemented as the project came together and there were no surprises.

I hired Thomas Custom Builders to remodel the top floor of our house, to add an additional bedroom and exterior window, and interior closet. Thomas Custom Builders is simply outstanding. They have a great group of quality craftsmen and allocated the necessary resources to finish the job professionally and on time. I met with the owner during the bidding process, and he was the only potential contractor who bid on the job and who had the keen eye to notice several things that needed to be done that others did not even consider. This type of attention to detail carried through to allow the work to be completed more professionally and quickly. Their workers arrived before the job started to place scaffolding. Once the job started, they worked efficiently and did the job with a high level of quality. We remain highly impressed. The communication was outstanding at every phase, so we knew exactly what to expect and how to coordinate with them. The work performed was even better, just top notch all around. I have some degree of experience with construction and home renovation, and I cannot think of a better contractor to hire for either building or renovation. These situations have the potential to be nightmares if the work isn't completed in a timely and professional manner or with good quality, but there were no such concerns with Thomas. They are dedicated professionals who do everything the right way. It is refreshing to see this and I am glad that I hired them for the job. Can't recommend them highly enough.

We used Thomas Custom Builders for our kitchen renovation earlier this year. We also had the wood floors of our entire living area refinished and new wood floors feathered into one room. We lived downstairs during the renovation and could not have been more pleased with the experience. The results are gorgeous and we get compliments all the time. Brian et al had amazing skills working with floors, walls and ceilings that were not level. Not only do the kitchen and floors look amazing, but they stayed on budget and schedule. I am a pain to work with and they were so accommodating when I asked for changes. They cleaned the area every day and were very respectful of our house. After having a terrible experience with another contractor during a bathroom renovation (dirty, behind schedule...), Thomas Custom Builders was such a breath of fresh air!!

TCB built an addition on my house, adding a bathroom, walk-in closet, bedroom, patio, and siding. TCB also renovated a bathroom two years later. Both times, the construction was performed on time, within budget, in a clean manner with the TCB professionals always being courteous, respectful and giving expert guidance when modifications had to be made. We contracted to finish a guest suite and full bath. The project was completed on time and in budget. Small corrections were made without delay or complaint and they stand behind their work even months later. The construction schedule was well planned and executed. We have used Thomas Custom Builders on four big projects. We had a complete kitchen renovation, new master bathroom, and a basement remodel. Each time they were prompt in arriving every morning, and I can not say enough about the finished projects. Our kitchen was completely gutted, and that can be a very trying process because of the time spent not having cooking appliances, but Thomas Custom Builders used their time so wisely, and I didn't have to go long without being able to use my kitchen. The master bathroom is beautiful, as is the basement.

We hired Thomas Builders for a complete kitchen renovation. They came highly recommended by friends who had done the same. We were pleased because they did everything they said they would do precisely on schedule. Excellent! My second job but not my last with TCB! They have done two major remodels and both were perfect. Unlike many contractors, they use dedicated crews and subs along with an on site job foreman -- this along with an attention to detail and craftsmanship make them standouts in Virginia. Also, unique to TCB is there amazing customer service -- one of the company owners will make regular checks on the project and the team responds immediately to any and all concerns/issues ... The TCB folks also are able to combine extensive knowledge with an eye for design and see that through to execution on the job site. They came up with an amazing solution to an electrical problem in a high rise condo job that added a unique beam design to the ceiling and made the property a stand-out one in the building!

I got my front portch remodeled by Thomas Custom Builders Inc. and I can not say enough good things about the result and the experience! They redid my entrance way by redesigning the stairs, widening the side walk and adding out door lighting. It looks fantastic! The two workers that worked on my portch were there every day on time and completed the remodel in a very reasonable time frame. They were always very courteous and kind. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is interested in redoing any space of their home!

We could not have been more happy with a contractor! Thomas Custom Builders strength is not only in well built and designed home additions and remodels, but customer service! This showed in every aspect of the process, from the design to the building, to the subcontractors. Any problem encountered during the construction process were quickly acknowledged and addressed. For example, a tree was accidentally hit and some bark knocked off by some machinery during construction. Dave had a tree company out the next day to assess the damage and address it if needed. (Luckily the tree was just fine without that bit of bark!) But I was truly IMPRESSED by this small gesture. The work was done quickly and on a schedule, so we were never surprised about what came next. The subcontractors were all respectful of our home, and professional. Brian, the head carpenter, went above and beyond to make our addition exactly what we wanted. We absolutely love our new addition. I would not hesitate to use and recommend this company again; I plan to hire them in the future to remodel a bathroom in our house. We had a wonderful experience with Thomas Custom Builders, adding a garage and new master bedroom/bathroom to our house. Our house is a split foyer, so adding a garage at ground level was a bit of a challenge, but they helped us find a design that worked well. The entire project was finished on schedule, and any concerns that we brought up were addressed right away. I was really pleased that every single request we had was always met with the utmost courtesy and professionalism, and they clearly wanted to make sure we were happy with the result. We would definitely hire them again!

Our Thomas Custom Builders experience was exceptional from concept, design, building and completion. We thoroughly enjoyed working with their team as they were good listeners and they had a lot of great ideas. We built a two bedroom, two bathroom, full kitchen in-law suite/ accessory dwelling unit which increased our house size by about a third while keeping to the style of our existing house. Thomas Custom Builder's creative, interactive design phase was smooth and they even provided a model for my mother-in-law to enjoy discussing with family and friends. Construction phase communication was really great as we knew what to expect on the time table and everything happened as planned. We did a great job of planning together, selected many items early and had very few changes. The completion of the work ended on time with very issues to discuss. Thomas Custom Builders experience from start to finish exceeded expectations and we not only would use them again, we would also recommend them to others as we have done.

We hired them after our first meeting with Rick Thomas. From the start, he understood the kind of end result we wanted. We felt comfortable with him, his designers, and his workmen throughout the entire process. Our crew was headed by Brian Smith, who arrived every day on time---and Brian skillfully, thoughtfully, and cheerfully oversaw our entire project. Dave came over nearly every day to make sure Brian had all the needed resources. Brian and the crew cleaned up the work site every day. TCB removed every bit of debris from our project. We added several items to the initial scope of work---and those add-ons were handled professionally. We’d make a request, Rick would send a change order showing any additional cost, and the work would be completed after we approved the order. Everything we added made sense to add right then---while skilled experts were on hand to see that everything was done properly. Our project stayed on track and finished exactly when Rick had initially scheduled it to finish. It took only about 4 weeks to complete our entire job. A year later, we hired TCB to build a beautiful new deck. Every single day we would take note of something, large or small, that made us know we had the right people handling our project. We are very pleased with the results, and we highly recommend Thomas Custom Builders to anyone who’d like quality work done. We feel like we have a new house!!

Thomas Custom Builders built a large addition and also an almost whole house renovation. The team was great- professional, prompt, on schedule and on budget. When a couple construction issues came up due to the layout of our original home, they offered professional suggestions to resolve it. I recommend Thomas highly for both small or large renovations or additions. My family and I have worked with them on several houses and various projects.

Completely gutted and rebuilt kitchen area (including design), including taking down two walls (one load bearing); installing a beam; removing two existing window and installing two new ones; installing island cabinetry with moulding, all associated electrical, plumbing and HVAC, new wood floors (woven in with old), refinishing all wood floors, painting (in kitchen area and other areas in house). Also did some additional work (creating a new access panel to attic, venting bathroom fan to outside, additional electrical/lighting, new storm door install). I used one of their designers to help design the new space and to help me choose and obtain all of my finish options. It went great, and I highly recommend Thomas Custom Builders (TCH). These are the reasons I recommend them: •They stuck to the agreed upon time frame -- the job took slightly longer than planned, but that is because I added more work to it. •They also stuck to our agreed upon price (unless I made a change that altered it), and they were very clear about the break out between labor and materials, and how much each part of the job cost. •The Project Manager was there every single day, when he said he would be there, and stayed even when there was little for him to do himself. (And he did a lot of excellent work himself.) •I was inconvenienced as little as possible -- the team kept the construction debris to a minimum and cleaned up so well at the end of each day that I could have eaten off the floor. They also helped me set up my temporary kitchen area in my kitchen by moving my old refrigerator and microwave into the space for me. During the initial demo, they brought in a small dumpster (which was on my driveway), but within two days it was gone. From that time forward they removed debris from the premises on a regular basis. •They kept me apprised of exactly what was going to happen and when it would happen. I was always well informed (which was important to me). •They treated me with a great deal of respect and addressed all of my concerns as soon as I had them. The Project Manager was very good at communicating in a positive manner, and he never got rattled even when there were problems to solve. He dealt extremely well with the homeowner's (my!) stress that surfaced at times. When I needed to contact him outside of working hours, he always responded in a timely manner (usually almost immediately). •Dave, the partner who runs the construction side, showed up regularly at the site and I was able to get a hold of him whenever I had questions that the Project Manager couldn't answer (although the Project Manager was extremely proactive and usually got answers for me ASAP). •They owned their mistakes -- there was an issue where the wrong type of tape was used to fasten down some cardboard to my wood floors in an adjoining room. When the tape was taken up, the floor finish was damaged. Even though we had not planned to refinish the floors in that room, TCH refinished them at no cost to me. •The team had wonderful attention to detail, which was important to me because I care about the details. No detail was too small, from matching the paint on light switch covers to the walls to ensuring the finish work was well executed. •The designer listened to all of my ideas and incorporated all that made sense to incorporate. She also offered many great ideas, and was not offended if I didn't accept them. She was easy to work with and also acted as a sounding board as I chose all of my options, coming out to the site on several occasions to look at the various options from which I was choosing. •Everyone went above and beyond to ensure that I was 100% satisfied every step of the way. TCH is not the most inexpensive choice. However -- having going through an extensive kitchen reno before in the past -- it was relatively painless (as these things can be), the results met and exceeded my expectations (which is saying a lot, because my expectations are always high), and they were extremely pleasant to work with from start to finish. It was worth every single penny.

I have worked with Rick Thomas on only one project so far but I have to say that it is clear they know their business and their craft very well. The experience shows. It is because of this Rick and his staff are extremely easy to work with. I have worked with quite a few design/build firms but few have an equally unpretentious way of a) delivering a high quality product to their Clients and b) making sure that their Client is happy with the end cost.

TCB met with my wife and I when we were looking to build a house on our land. They suggested a modular house, which worked out great! They oversaw the entire project from groundbreaking to completion. We have since used them for other projects. They are respectful, knowledgeable and completed all projects in time.

Having my loft area remodled into a 2-station office and reading room. However, before the job could be completed, I decided to move out of state and had to cancel the project after about 1/2 completed. When I cancelled the project, with my reason for cancelling, Mr. Thomas was very understanding and helpful -- I would not hesitate to recommend him and his firm and work associates to anyone planning a professional remodeling project -- timely, great suggestions and recommendations; easily understood exactly what my wife and I wanted to accomplish.

After receiving several estimates to turn our attic into a master bedroom suite with a bathroom, we went with Thomas Custom Builders (TCB). They did not provide the cheapest estimate we received, but they were extremely professional, provided the most thorough information, seemed focused on doing things right, and we were really comfortable working with them and communicating with them. We are extremely happy we went with TCB. The renovation process hasn't been perfect - which is really not possible - but TCB has been excellent at finding solutions to the unforeseen things we could not anticipate. More importantly, they do things the right way and are honest about what is going on and what needs to be done. This was our first renovation, so we asked a ton of questions, but the entire TCB team always took the time to talk us through stuff and answer any questions we had.
