Wood floors are wonderful in kitchens!
Wood floors aren't so wonderful with dogs...

If you choose wood, I would go satin or matte finish, wire brushed or hand scraped texture.
I had slate tile in my last kitchen & loved it. I bought a house with wood kitchen floors & would prefer to switch it out for nice tiled floor. We have a 60 lb. lab & wipe up a lot of drool marks & water spots.

Use wood flooring especially if the kitchen is opened to other parts of the house.

Wood flooring gets beat up in kitchen from dropped dishes ect. (If you have kids, or clumsy adults).

I have to agree that wood floor in a kitchen would require some extra care. We have wood floors throughout the living and dining room but in the kitchen have gone with a high end vinyl tile for a stone look and will be easier to maintain in a busy kitchen

If you have wood elsewhere and this is open area use the same wood or go to something not in the wood family. I know many people with wood floors in the kitchen and they love them, they stand up quite well. They do get scratches and dings its part of life .Wood and large dogs are not always the best choice I have a really great laminate through my house that has stood up to 2 big dogs , grandkids in and out of the pool and many huge parties over the last 7 yrs and still looks great. I just put the same flooring in a clients house and it is a hit. It looks like slate even with a bit of texture and cleans with a damp cloth.

This is a question posted on Houzz daily and I can understand why. When polls are included the wood flooring over anything else in the kitchen wins hands down. Glass and plates are less likely to break on wood, its also easier on the feet than tile. Here are some photos for inspiration.

Thank you for all the feedback. Assuming I go with a wood, should I go with engineered or solid? What is a good wood for either choice?

Oak is affordable, hard, and can be stained any variety of colors. Go with solid unless you need engineered for special circumstances.

We have wood flooring in the entire kitchen, foyer, dining space, and great room. And a large dog that goes flying through them all. Absolutely no problem. If something spills, you just wipe it up. Using different materials for these spaces in my opinion is choppy and unattractive.

As do we. Red oak. Two dogs, two kids and two adults. No problems. Love it.

We used oak, stained and finished on site, 8 years ago. Tough as nails. I would like it a little shinier however, so if we ever need to have them refinished I think I'd go up a notch in the gloss level.

Oak is great for pets and children. A satin finish will help to hide any marks too. I wouldn't go too dark with the stain however.

Real wood in the kitchen is the best, I have had white oak an maple maple, finished on site, and both are perfect.

Wood is always beautiful However as you mention dogs I do know that because their saliva is so acidic it tends to eat into the shine of the wood and as such should speak to your local installer that can can suggest a sealer that might be more durable.

I have had hardwood floors in my kitchen for 21 years. They have held up well. Water is not their friend!! I don't have a dog buy my parents dog destroyed their hardwood floors...toe nails.
