What is a banjo counter?

This post inspired me to count my own banjos this morning. I have two. I keep mine in the bedroom and living room, though - never the bathroom.

We had a small vanity in our tight bathroom. Not a 60" like you have here, this was just wide enough for the sink and a tube of toothpaste. We replaced it with a pedestal sink and it really opened up the room. Slight difference, not having the knee bonker down there, but I was surprised how much it changed the overall feel of the space. Under-counter storage was lost and we had to figure that out, but it worked very well in our case.

From the photo, I notice your bathroom is very rectilinear. Adding something curvy could break that up and create interest, although at the expense of some under-counter storage.

I too am trying to decide if I should have a banjo counter over toilet. Some people say it's dated. Do people still do this? I sorta like it, but don't want to be out of date. Plus, I've heard complaints about trying to fix toilet or things falling in.

What will be the purpose of the "banjo" extension? It seems as though you have enough counter area. If you are looking for more above counter storage, then replace your mirror with a good sized medicine cabinet that will store the mouth wash, toothpaste, shaving cream...all the "ugly" toiletries. Two or three floating shelves above your toilet would look nice and they can hold a basket of soaps, rolled towels, apothecaries with cotton balls or bath beads, scented oils, candles, etc.

You may also want to relocate your toilet tissue holder to the side of the vanity as a recessed unit.
