My first reaction is that white may not go with the cream/tan wall color, so keep in mind what other color changes you're thinking of and how it all works with adjacent spaces.

Another consideration I would make is whether to paint all or some of the wood, and even using different colors on different features (chunky columns vs window casing, etc.). That's a lot to think about right there.

Overall, I agree with the need to lighten up the space. Too heavy, unless you use the room exclusively for cigars and port.

Fireplace....tough one because it potentially means a lot of work with very hard, coarse material above the gorgeous floor. I'm not a fan of brick fireplaces - too uniform, too thick, too everywhere. BUT, I'm from and living in the Pacific Northwest, so brick is not as common as it is in the midwest. We chose sandstone because it is timeless for our region - that's what our old public buildings are built from, heck I can see the quarry from my rooftop when I clean the dryer vent each spring - so I am not worried about it becoming "dated" from my perspective. That being said, consider where you are. If you're in Cincinnati or St. Louis, the existing brick could really work along with the right treatment to lighten up the surrounding material.

It would be a shame to paint that original woodwork! It is very dark, but could you lighten the wall color to a very light taupe? That current color is too buff and creamy. Cool it down and brighten it up. Refinish the wood floors and take them to a natural color. The contrast would be very updated and would lighten the feel of the room. I would agree that a tiled fireplace would make a cool and current feel yet keep the integrity of the fireplace. It may be a lot of work, but I would strip and stain the woodwork before I would paint that! It is beautiful.

I actually like the dark wood and think it would pare nice with a light sage green or a light grey blue colour paint. Here's some ideas on how to paint for different wood trims. I would think of the trim trim goes with the period of your house it's nice to keep, or if it's throughout the whole house you would have to commit to white trim everywhere...

The fireplace maybe there is some way to bring the stone back to its natural beauty, some cleaner or company. Or reface it all together.

IMHO - white for the walls seems best with all the dark wood….but, as requested above, it would be helpful to see more photos of the room. I have a funny feeling that despite those who decry painting over wood, this might be a good room for just such a treatment. Then the options for wall color opens up exponentially.

I would have painted the shelves on each side of the fireplace in white and all dark wood around windows and around ceiling.Maybe nice rug

painting the wood is not the answer. what is the dark through the arch? I would paint the walls white, clean the fireplace brick, get a sisal area rug, get wheat color couch.

Do you want to repaint the adjacent rooms as well? Also, it appears that you have multiple shades of dark woodwork in these two rooms, but it may be the camera angle and lighting affecting the image. Can you clarify?

I agree the room needs lightening and the fireplace needs freshening up--and oh my, you have some gorgeous features in these rooms to play with! I can't wait to see how this discussion develops.

I am picturing some creamy whites in here---Benjamin Moore has many shades in this family. I haves used BM Ivory White 925, BM Seashell, and BM Sailcloth in projects with great results.

I'd say, "Go for it!" Light and bright plus some texture around the firebox.

Is that the back of a dark sofa in the entrance of the room? That one piece is adding a lot to the dark feel. I would move that sofa, paint wall a brighter colour, and add a mantle surround as already suggested. A light area rug would help also.

Please don't paint the woodwork; respect the integrity of this beautiful Arts and Crafts style home. Painted woodwork is a passing trend, and stripping it is a chore.
