Update this old English bar

We are buying a great house and the owners were huge beer drinkers. We have 2 small kids. We'd like to either update this bar or do something with it because it looks really expensive. BUT it also dates the home. Please help.

If it isn't something you will enjoy, sell it on Craig's List and use the $$$ to do something meaningful in the home for your family.

Looks adjacent to the kitchen. I agree that selling it is the way to go. Or you could encourage the sellers to take it with them (be very tactful).

If you end up keeping it, it could be a coffee and ice cream bar.

Make it into an old time soda fountain for the family. It would be so much fun when friends come over with their kids too.

How are the bar options shaping up for you?

Is this a family room or recreation room that is NOT visible from the front entrance? If so and you don't require the space, keep it and - as suggested above - make it your own.

I like the idea of an ice cream/soda fountain. Depending on your tastes and the other furnishings for that room, you might consider painting it in a summery pastels shade or two. Find some retro bar stools or recover some inexpensive ones to coordinate with the paint shades.

I think we need more info as flopsycat1 stated. I personally love the bar, however I would remove the beer stein shelving on the left side of the bar.

If the way I'm viewing the pictures is correct, it looks like there is a wall dividing the bar area from the kitchen.. There has to be a clever way to remove the wall and expanded the kitchen into the bar area.

Off the top of my head, if you joined these two spaces (completely removing the wall that separates them), I would convert the cabinetry to open shelving on the wall with the vent hood and match it to the shelving inside the bar area. I would go for an English Country theme over all... Hard to say what other changes would be involved since we're missing a view of the kitchen.. but just a thought (although, probably a major renovation - would be much less taxing to simply remove the bar).

Hi all! thank you for the comments. This is the family room. You walk through the living room in order to get to it. There is a wall dividing the kitchen from the bar but the problem with removing the wall is that it's where the sink is attached. I think it's too costly to move the sink. I would like to remove the bar but my husband thinks that it's a waste to demolish something that was so expensive for the last owner to put in. He thinks bars are coming back into fashion. I think we will remove the top of the bar. The home is a spanish style home and we'd like to make it all spanish in color and furniture. This english pub sticks out!! Do you think we could tile the sides or top?

Just add some classic wood bar stools with dark leather seats. Once all the beer storage and decor is gone, it will look much less Engllish pub-style and more like international generic bar style. Tiling over the top would be worse than selling it. Add ice cream maker and popcorn popper, maybe some framed movie posters.

Hilarious! What a find! If you are going to keep it, I would embrace the *bar* fully. Turn the family room into a darker loungy bar area, paint behind the bar in dark colors, like an Irish bar or something.

Remove the neon, and shelves with steins, and go more sophisticated. Could be quite cool.

Or you could go old school malt shop.

Spanish is tough to pull off without the right architecture. This is an expensive piece and can be used different ways. What about a homework bar? Make homework fun - keep books and school supplies and craft supplies here. This is where kids come to get that stuff done. It can be a place to hide computers and printers and be your "imagination station" do lose all the little shelving organized for glasses and consider painting the panelling a color that would work nicely with this wood tone - a soft neutral camoflauge (green undertone) like bm spanish olive .. don't tile it or take down the top.

Apple pie: "Add ice cream maker and popcorn popper, maybe some framed movie posters."

That's a great idea, too. You could turn it into a theater room, and make that the concession stand.

I think movie theater concession is an adorable idea! I'll take down the beer steins thing and put up movie theater signage, put in a popcorn maker and a little holder for snacks. I can't put in candy because my kids are 6 and 4 and I don't want to hear them whining all day about wanting to have the candy they see. But GREAT ideas guys!

With Spanish style you could take this thing "old west" when California and Texas were still Spanish colonies. Get your cowboy thinking hat on....add some carvings....
