living room design help needed

last month

Help needed here for the designer challenged. I need this space to function hard. Think layered NYC apartment style. It’s the only living space aside from the absurdly large kitchen which I’ll get to next. I need as much seating and storage I can get, window treatments, and paint or wall coverings. I’ve tried many layouts with the furniture from floating the sectional to separating it the way you see here. I expect to purchase new seating and storage. I don’t have to use what’s here. But the piano does need to stay somewhere in this room. The TV can be moved.

float one sofa facing the fireplace to make an angle with the other sofa centered in front of the window.

Mount the TV on the wall where it is now (similar to how the firebox is on the fireplace)

Move the piano to the stairwell wall. Use the blue piece as a coffee table/and extra seating.

If you need more storage, get tall closed units and a narrow shoe storage cabinet for at the door, behind the sofa. An area rug to define the seating area. I would remove the curtains and install a top down bottom up blind for light control and privacy, and to minimize the fabric over the sofa.

The wall color is fine, get a patterned area rug to introduce some interesting color and pattern.

EDIT ... the mantle should be simple with only 3 items to one side. same with the piano.

Personal photos should be in personal spaces. If you need more storage or extra seating think about getting a credenza by the door/behind the sofa

Box up all the accessories, the start moving furniture to see if the above furniture layout works for you. If it does, then move the tv.

And, move ll the small furniture pieces out while working with the big ones. Who needs a gym 😆

I would paint all the wall a creamy white including the wood panelling wall. Install a mantel on the fireplace either wood or painted depending on your style of furniture.

    With your existing furniture:

Thanks! How would you “lay out” the floating shelves and what color and material?

    Everyone you’re so helpful - :)

Love all this feedback. Tysm. Here to add that I have had it set up in the past so the sectional was connected and the piano was on the stairwell wall, but the space between the back of the sofa and the piano was so tight. I’ll try it again and I’ll also try removing the small section and replacing with two chairs instead. Love the window treatment options!

Well, your have a lot of pieces for the space. Move out all the laundry in what's suppose to be a space of relaxtion. Then ditch all the small tables, and bitty decor items. Less is more in a tight space.

--Spinet against staircase as others suggest.

--TV on current spinet wall, not angled but over a console cabinet, not too deep, to look for on FB Marketplace or Craigslist.

--Do Lisedv's first layout so you can keep your sectional.

--Get round storage coffee table to put in the "L" (Not so fancy or large as the one below, but this idea) Move the current storage trunk at the end of a bed upstairs.

--.Get a nesting side table instead that you can pull as needed. If you have a decent size new coffee table everyone seated on L sectional can reach the round one.

--Lisedv's idea about painting the wall the same as the other walls so you have flow and not chopped up walls in such a tight space with so much furniture.

--The mirror is pointless where it is. Put it over the spinet after you move it.

--After you paint the fireplace wall, add art to the mantel, add large art to the mantel and relocate all the little pictures to a personal space. This palette echoing floors and sofas.

Ascella Canvas Art · More Info

--Get a patterned rug in red/brown and gray, this palette of reddish brown that harmonize with brick fireplace and floor and some grays to harmonize with sofa and art. (That's your design lesson for today--any new pieces have to go with your givens: floor and fireplace so everything harmonizes. Don't have so many sofa pillows.

--No decor items, no small tables in a room this size. And really, no laundry done in the living room. Make it a beautiful living space for relaxing not laundry, which is work, not relaxation.

A Manhattanite here. I appreciate your storage and layering needs.

    1. Practical details first: How many people live in your house? How many sit in this room at the same time? You say as much seating as you can get. How often do you max out on seating on your existing pieces? Do you intend to keep your exisint pieces? How does it work sitting on the one side that has no arm?

    2. What types of items do you need to store.

You've tried the piano by the stairs and sofa parallel to the fireplace and it was too tight. This is good info to know. I trust that you were right about this and we need to come up with something else for you.

You say your kitchen is gigantic. Is it appropriate for a seating area in there? A TV area in there? I presume not, but thought I'd go out on a limb.

Thanks, Kendrah, for all the thought! We’re a family of 5.5 with 2 part time dogs - one lab and one cockapoo. These two spaces - the LR and the kitchen - are the only places to hang out. (Making the basement useable is next) Yes, the kitchen is large enough that I would gladly use some for a sitting/lounge spot. I have a TV in there now. It’s also functioning as a mudroom and it’s where the printer lives. Back to the Living Room… on a regular basis, I’d say 4 people would like to sit in the LR at one time. My kids would love to have friends over and that would require room for at least 6. Sitting on the sofa with no arm is not comfy. It’s rare for someone to choose that seat. Storage and display needs are generally extra blankets, photos, books, plants, maybe some hidden office and homework supplies, a place to tuck mail and magazines for later, piano music, candles and decor to have on hand for various occasions. Aside from the piano, nothing else “must” stay. Thanks again :)

    @Sarah Forti

Already looks better with your sectional as you show it in the above picture. Now that I have more details, I'll take another look at the previous floor plans I submitted to see if I can make any improvements for storage.

Here is some inspro with modern NYC living room design

If a TV isn't required in the above suggestion by @Celery something like that would work nicely offering storage at the bottom of the wall units and with the console with storage behind the sectional.

  • last month

I think the sectional is too large for the room. I’d mount the tv over the mantle.

Are you committed to keeping the fireplace? Will you ever use it? This space is very small considering the amount of people and activity you'll have in here, so to make the very most of it, I'd get rid of your fireplace. It will give you an entire wall against which to place furniture.

I'd layout your room like this - with piano against the stairs.

For the storage / TV unit, you can hack Ikea Billy bookcases, like in this pic, and hang the TV on an arm that you can pull out and angle towards the sofa. (Or use another shallow storage unit. I'd use storage doors on the top and bottom too. Open shelves just get cluttered looking and you can store more with closed shelves.)

Get another shallow storage unit for the other side of the doorway to the kitchen too.

I'd paint the cabinets, walls and ceilings all the same light color to make the room feel nice and open.

Get a coffee table that has storage in it too.

Get slender discrete reading floor lamps that visually disappear.

I do need to keep the fireplace for now. I don’t think the cost of demo-ing all the brick would be worth it and I’d lose 18” of room width kf if I simply walled it off.

Love the above insp pic. Maybe that with the TV on the stairwell wall…

Would the tv fit mounted above the fireplace? Then you’d have one focal point to design around seating wise.

Cabinets with storage on each side of the fireplace plus storage behind the sofa.

Is there room for the tv to be mounted next to the fireplace? If not, even though it's not my favorite idea, I would suggest placing the tv over the fireplace with bookcases with some closed storage on either side of the fireplace. A sofa that's not as deep as sectionals tend to be might be your best bet. Place that facing the fireplace with two chairs under the window and the piano on the stair wall. You could find a coffee table with ottomans underneath that you can pull out for extra seating when needed. This one even has storage in the ottomans!
