Although we own a townhouse, there is a unit below us and the bylaws restrict wood flooring. There is a new flooring product on the market called COREtec which is a floating vinyl floor with cork underneath that mimics the look of wood and supposed to be much less noisy than wood. We're considering this as an option; HOWEVER, we're concerned that, because it's a new product, it has no track record. Are any of you familiar with this product? We need to do something soon; our existing carpet is old and in bad shape. Thank you so much! ALSO, if the COREtec doesn't work out for some reason (we have a slight slope in the floor), we're considering Masland carpeting (Mesa Verde) and wonder if any of you are familiar with this brand and its quality. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want rigid flooring, you will need to fix the slope of the floor. If you don't have the budget for this type of correction, then soft coverings (like carpet) or resilient coverings (glue down vinyl, lino, marmoleum, glue down cork, etc) will be your only options.

Rigid floors require floors to be "flat" and on the same level. Sloping floors are very difficult for rigid flooring to handle. Again, if the slope is all on one level (an entire room with the same angle of tilt...no hills, no valleys) my cork floating floors can handle a 10% tilt. That's pretty impressive. It can NOT handle the tilt PLUS the hills/valleys.

If you have regular plywood (NOT OSB BOARD) you can glue down cork tiles = rigid surface that bends with your floor. It should wear as well as a well maintained carpet.

I hate carpet so I guess I would check out the vinyl flooring, see if it has a sound rating as most condos have a rating you have to follow on the web site it says it reduces noise but you would need to check it out more thoroughly

Coretec is a Luxury Vinyl Plank with a SMALL amount of cork (1.2mm) on the bottom and a core made up of limestone+resin. The top surface (wear layer) is vinyl. These floors are about as "loud" as engineered hardwood. The small amount of cork won't give much...but it is better than laminate.

You will still require underlay - go with cork as it offers the best sound ratings for the price. What I know about this form of vinyl plank is: they have issues with direct sunlight (they can delaminate when over heated) and they have issues with spills/moisture (they delaminate). We tried this form of flooring for a year...and discovered these issues. We lost a tremendous amount of money with warranty issues = delamination.

This type of vinyl can NOT go in kitchens/entranceways/bathrooms and should be kept out of direct sunlight (it curls and warps just like any plastic when left in the sun).

The vinyl planks have issues with uneven subfloors. SOME FLOORS can handle a slight tilt BUT THE ENTIRE FLOOR has to be on the same tilt. If part of the floor (say in the living room) is flat but a small area has a tilt = NO RIGID FLOORING!

If your subfloor is clean plywood or clean cement, you can glue down a cork floor instead of installing carpet. A glue down cork can handle all the hills and valleys your subfloor can throw at it...but it WILL NOT CORRECT the issues with the subfloor.

I moved a lot of coretec and haven't had any issues with the coretec had the product in fact all summer long this year and last year where temps get near 100 and stay that way June to September. Never had a delamination. Problem. Nor have my customers had nothing but good things to say. If you have any issues of your house getting 100+ degrees you may run into a problem but other than that you will be more than happy
