New home needs a facelift!

Hi there!
We would like help deciding on how to enhance our living room/kitchen/dining room in our new home. I was thinking about a new coat of paint (still need to decide on the colour but I think I would like to do it all one solid colour as opposed to the dark feature walls-what do you think?). I also want to paint/replace the trim, cabinetry and doors throughout the house as I think the oak makes the house look dated. I was wondering if anyone could help me with advice on colours and feedback on what you think.
Thanks so much in advance-it's our first home and I'm extremely excited about getting in and getting started!

Congrats on the new home! I would recommend before choosing a paint color that you choose a few inspiration pieces first to see how you like the color in the area. I agree with Dytecture, a gray tone would look nice. Here are a few ideas:

    Hope this helps you!

Great space! Also consider painting the ceiling, it will bring cohesiveness to the rooms, you can go 50% lighter than the wall color if need be, that's a lot of white overhead.

Yes, for sure that yellow does nothing to complement the wood tones. Paint the trim white. Don't be in a rush to paint your cabinets. They look pretty nice and won't be so glaring once you change the wall color. You are right about painting all the walls the same color. I also suggest painting the base of the island. What color depends on what you decide for the walls. Something contrasting would be nice. Maybe the same color as the walls in a deeper tone.

Thanks for all the feedback! Great Ideas! If I was to go with a greige, and white trim, would you recommend doing the mantel to match the trim? And what colour would you suggest contrasting the island base with??

Yes, do the mantel in white like the trim. The island base would be contrasted to the wall color.

I would do island base darker-they get kicked.

I was contemplating dark cabinetry, thinking that the room is so huge that it could carry it well, even doing the island dark and the mantel dark (replace tile) would provide some balance. I guess what I really want to know is what you want to achieve with the space besides paint. Trying to get a feel for your budget and the size of the project. Create some ideabooks for how you envision the space, that would make it easier to make suggestions. A pic of the inside of the island would be good, as it is now, I think that leveling the island and giving it a substantial base and counter with a similar pendant lamp would greater define the kitchen space and create a more inviting gathering space. The hexagon shape is sort of commercial looking.

I agree, all walls the same color with white trim, it is an open floor plan after all. Also agree with doing the island darker. Make sure to paint all doors the same white as the trim. It wasn't your question, but bring the furniture in from the perimeter of the rug and the whole space will look roomier. Play with the arrangement of the storage footstools and basketed bench, and the floor lamps, and find another location for the plant by the fireplace which just looks odd. The skirted round table closes off the space.

Thanks everyone. The pictures that are up are actually from the listing. We don't get possession until the 4th but I'm getting excited and want to to have a plan for when we get in so we can start on creating the space our home. I originally wanted to do the cabinets an off white to compliment the trim as well as keep the room bright and open. I was going to change the countertops to a darker colour to contrast. I'm still trying to envision a dark island...Good Idea on the doors too, I almost forgot about those!

I have similar cabinets in my kitchen and would love to know what paint color that you chose, and possibly updated pictures if you have got to that point yet:)
    Thanks!!!!!
