Maybe add an area rug, statue, a palm, or an arched light to fill in that area?

I am not much of an artist and the colors are just what was available in the draw app but you get the idea, hopefully.

Can you show us more angles of the room? Perhaps taken from the front of the sectional ?

I think a console table is essential behind a sofa. Otherwise, I'd utilise the space by using a console style desk and chair. It could be a really nice space to pay bills catch up on correspondence and browse the internet while staying connected to other living room activities.

Here a a couple of ideas. Removing the book case and adding floor and or desk top lamps with an oversized art piece on the wall will lighten the space.

if you need a little office space put a desk there and move away everything else if not try to move over the couch another foot or two so it looks a little smaller

I agree with @warner decor - A sofa back table (with a table lamp) is the way to go. Just be sure that it's not higher than the back of the sofa. Good luck!

Here's two other angles of the room.

Now that I see the other angles, I like what Sophie said, leave the dead space. I would move the book shelf and the plant out all together and put 2 coordinating pieces of artwork on the walls. ( I am thinking black and white pieces- nice matting).

I like the idea of a patterned chair to go with the desk since everything else in the room is solid.

Is this a multi function room? Is there a dinning area at the other end? If so, would you consider rotating the sofa and using the return to section off the dinning area while reorienting the living area to the windows and light? This will creat a more intimate living area, yet the low sofa wouldn't interfere with the overall sense of space in what looks to be quite a large room.

It's a huge room! It was a formal dining and living room but we aren't formal people so we use it as a living room. We've made the former dining room a sitting area. I've attached a picture.

How about repositioning the sectional into the "dead" space?

So the sectional is at an angle.
