Remodeling Stairs - Need Help w/ Risers

We recently had all of the carpet pulled from our new-ish home (built in the 70's) - as you can see the stairs did not get matching hardwood like the floors, it was out of our budget, stairs are expensive! So, I am sanding down the wood/treads and staining them a dark color to match the flooring. But with the stone flooring in the entry way I don't know what to do with the risers - I thought of painting them white but there is no white trim in the house so I don't know how that will look. We are planning on redoing all trim but not sure what it will be yet (dark wood or white), or when.

My major dilemma is that the risers are not 1 solid piece of wood that meet the tread - I don't know how to cover the gap the shows the subfloor. I thought of maybe doing a stone or tile riser vs. wood to be able to cover the area completely - again I think that may clash with the flooring in the entry way, which from what we were told would be quite a chore to remove, so it's not going anywhere anytime soon! Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks all!
