Doing Black & White tile flooring in a "multi-purpose" room

Would like suggestions on the best combination of tile to use to create a black & white checker board flooring. One that is durable, low maintenance. Like honed black granite but I do not like honed white granite (not white enough). Would white marble work better? If so, which kind do you recommend for that gives me just a bit of the marble look and also if I have more of the same color tones in each tile piece. (some white marble tiles can have a bit of an off white undertone which I don't want to have). Thank you in advance for your advice on my project.
