Adding an extension to the left end of the deck seems like the best approach if you don't want to expand the entire deck. How about a photo of the entire façade? It would help.

I would keep both sets of steps, but move them to the outside edges with plantings in between. For the cement patio you want, extend it out further than deck, and then curve around and under steps on that end. Edging the cement in similar stone to the house would look nice.

Wondering what the arguments are against extending the deck. To me, decks beat patios hands down.

mfwolfe is right if we where there we would look around to see where the million dollar view is. From the stone wall do we see the lake or the town dump? Why build anything where you would at sometime put up a fence.

Check with the local zoning. You may be limited by the amount of impermeable surface on your lot or the distance to the lake.

The spot in front of the stone wall would be a nice place for the patio with steps along the right side of the deck. However, it seems a little far from the kitchen. Maybe put the table on the deck and the lounge chairs on the patio.

The decorative stone around the lower portion of the cabin was expensive so hate to cover it up, hence the patio idea. This area looks out onto the lake which you can catch the reflection in the previous pics.
Good point to keep the eating area on the deck but the deck is only 10 ft deep. Another challenge is a dining set that will fit the space if placed on the deck.
Steps all across the front still doesn't resolve the flow to the deck. I like the photos with the corner steps. More pics are helpful.

To me the deck really looks like an afterthought. It isn't big enough and it has no defined perimeters. If you are set on a patio, which is fine, then just use the deck as stairs to the patio. Come out the door to four foot wide piece of the previous deck, step down to another four foot wide stair, last step two feet wide. These aren't set in stone measurements, they are just off the top of my head. You may need more or less width to compensate for the drop. Then you are at the patio which should have a low seating wall around part of it to define the area. You could making the seating wall from the same stone as the stone on the house.

The way to handle the narrow depth of the deck is to put a bench along the edge to act as both railing and seating. Get a narrow long table, or make one. Push the table next to the railing seating and chairs along the other sides or another bench.

Groveraxle's picture is so helpful! The design actually improves the walking pattern to the dock/beach. That said, then it begs the question as to what the front of the deck should look like? Take out both sets of steps and add plantings? I would like to keep the steps that go down in front of the sliding glass doors if that doesn't look funny. Thoughs? More pics Groveraxle and Dan?
P.S. Mfwolfe. Deck was not an afterthought but certainly a poor plan. Trying desperately to recover on the overall appearance.

My instinct would be to keep the steps closer to the front door. The new steps on the end and the ones in front of the slider feel redundant. Removing the steps in front of the slider would also give you an unbroken line of landscaping there. That said, I would make a list of pros and cons of each set of steps and then decide. You can probably remove the steps as a single unit, set it aside for a couple of weeks, and reinstall them if you find you miss them.

I like the grand feel of walking out of the living area, over the deck into the yard. So I personally would leave the ones by the slider. Railings are usually needed for a high deck and block the view from the living area so opting for the steps in front of the slider would allow an unimpeded view.

Where are the kitchen and the outdoor grill? I don't like the idea of walking down steps carrying food and beverages. Lots of potential for trips and spills. I'd simply extend the deck out further where the existing stairs are, then replace those stairs with a single set that goes all the way across. Put a bench, backed by a railing to lean against, on the side where the lattice is.

Agree that railings are needed on those steps.

If the patio ends up as your best option, be sure the stairs are fairly deep (the run). Exterior stairs have a longer run than interior stairs. They're safer that way. I'd run the stairs all around the front and side, with some big flower pots or built in benches, and night lights to be sure people don't tumble off.
