A little color wouldn't hurt. Neither would a great big plant. No more dark wood furniture. Very cool mirror, BTW.

Love Grover's changes -- longer console is better and TV much better over the console. Bonus, watching TV for extended periods won't hurt your neck over the console like it will over the fireplace. It looks FANTASTIC!

Grover's changes are great. However, if you are going for a Pottery Barn/warm look, the accents are much too modern. Get a large coffee table, and I say go blue, not red for accent color. Fake plants and some rustic/warm accents will help.

(And I don't think the ceiling fan is horrible at all)

White crown molding and chair rail also are good and easy accents. With chair rail you also have the option to change the color scheme above or below to mix up the color of the room.

These are not my designs but those of others I have seen on Houzz. You can also use white as an accent wall to make the room pop and I also agree with groveraxle in needing window treatments of some type.

I see you have little ones, so I think a large ottoman/coffee table with some color would look amazing !! I always stayed away from coffee tables when my kids were little--one more thing to clean handprints off of, and no bumped heads!! place a decorative tray on the ottoman and you can set a drink/snack on it safely...

I think paint is the least of your concerns.

I agree with mom2hsm, no glass coffee table if you have kids. How about a fun, upholstered round ottoman as a coffee table. Add some drapery panels to soften the windows and pops of color with throw pillows.

Citron yellow or blue as another accent?

Pottery Barn didn't have the Pottery Barn look, so I went to Restoration Hardware and West Elm.

Try turning the couch so you don't walk into the back of it. I like the TV where it is now as long as you can watch comfortably without straining your neck. A cocktail ottoman or table is needed and window panels would add oomph, color and height to the room. Larger console, also. Not sure about the mirror - it may be too low or just not right.

I thought to turn the sectional, too, until I saw Grover's picture of the bigger console with the tv above it. That makes a huge difference! You don't really need more chairs, you need a bigger console and go switch the tv and mirror. Also love the colored ottoman/coffee table.

Grover...what would turquoise look like with the browns and lime greens? Not enough punch? And what about drapery panels instead of roman shades? Are panels just too fussy for so many windows? What colors do you like K 7803?

Red is the complement to green.

There isn't enough space by the fireplace for proper curtain panels to stack. You could do panels on the bigger window at the end of the couch, and matching or coordinating shades on the fireplace windows.

Someone asked for turquoise. It packs less of a punch, makes it almost monochromatic.

I really like the turquoise, but that's just me. What color of blue were you wondering about, K7803?

I would add a pair of white linen drapery panels to the window near the sofa and roman shades in the same fabric for the other two. A round cocktail table in a light painted finish would be nice. Also, add a pair of poufs or small upholstered ottomans on either side of the console table in a print that you love. Add printed pillows to the sofa. I prefer turquoise or blUe over red. Crown moulding would add architectural interest and polish the room. Good luck!

In general a few thoughts. Take it to another dimension by adding more dimension in all ways. Your sofa is such a dominating feature in both size and color, you need to balance it with other furniture, color and layers. (Like a TV console/ bookcase, etc). I like Grover's Restoration Hardware, West Elm look, as a start. The wall color also needs to be stronger to balance the room. That doesn't mean lime walls, but could be a stronger taupe /gray color. The mirror isn't working at all, so perhaps move to a bedroom. Find something really dynamic, and statement- making. Perhaps something from reclaimed wood, or old. Add layers of fabrics. I like the lime but the pillows are too much the same, mix it up. Panels, a throw, bring in additional color, and patterns while varying the pattern size too. Also lower the portraits. Wow! Thanks everyone? Why doesn't the mirror work? Should I move sectional? The blue I was thinking about was a nautical blue color...moody blue by sherwin Williams for accents. I'm not into loud statements, more relaxed.

Your room needs more color and pattern. The teal blue is a good addition, but you may also want to consider small pops of raspberry or cranberry. These can be smaller elements in patterned fabrics, artwork and accessories - even a fresh vase of flowers. You clearly also need to find a nice coffee table that is in proportion to your sectional. I love the Moody Blue color, but I'm not sure about it with lime green. It doesn't seem right; not sure why. When I searched for moody blue, many of the stunning rooms had it paired with lots of white or cream. If you have white cabinets, paint your kitchen that color! I normally am not a fan of accent walls, but it might work in your room. Here is moody blue on a fireplace wall similar to yours, but paired with gold. Maybe yours with white roman shades and drapes?

Your mirror is beautiful. With it hung low over the low console, the overall look is squished. I never say this, but I think the mirror could be hung a little higher, until you get a bigger console for that wall. Or two tall matching bookshelves for either side of the console table would be good, too, and offer more storage. But definitely move the mirror up 6-12" for now and put taller vases, maybe with forsythia or curly willow branches to give some height, on the table

Here is your sofa with the color blue stone from West Elm. This MIGHT work, but it will take some doing, I think. The problem, IMO, is that the sofa seems to have a red undertone. This is always the problem working with color on a monitor.

The couches are a true chocolate brown...no red. Should I eliminate the green?

The walls are a great color and I love the samples you picked even though picking the patterned rug or drape would be the controlling factor. And, the effect your wanting needs to add warm color tones to add warmth in the room.

I do love k7803 and the green is very happy and bright.

Here are a few quick suggestions... Try some decorative drapes, a rug, a round cushion ottoman (perhaps of a bold, vibrant colour), some new throw pillows with a cool, unique design or pattern on them. I'd replace the small unit under the mirror and put in something a bit taller, maybe a bookcase or thin unit. Re: colors, I'd go with a cool color. Maybe think about painting the wall with the TV an accent colour that compliments the tones you choose. I like the mirror but do agree that it's hung too low and doesn't really work in the room. If you can, you might want to think about changing your sofa as it's very large and is taking away from the room becoming a focal point. Hope this helps....

Garrison Creek has some great suggestions, but I disagree that your sofa is too large. Candace Olsen often crams a giant sectional into a much smaller room than yours ("cozy"). The difference is she uses pattern to break up the large spance of solid fabric and nearly always makes use of wall space with built-ins. If you are staying in that house awhile, you might consider having some built-ins made for the living room for decorating and storage.

Notice how Candace also manages to fit a lot of functional furniture in the space, but leaves walkways open. That's why your room is left looking like it needs something -- it does! It really needs color, art, and more (bigger) furnishings to balance out the large, dark sofa. I love the idea of the two colored leather cubes for kids to sit on and play on, plus they can add a punch of color. I also love Grover's idea of the behind the sofa table. It covers up the big area of brown fabric behind the couch and is very useful for making a little vignette as you enter the room. If it is two levels, the bottom could have baskets for kids' books, etc.

Moving the sectional completely depends on what other furniture you are considering buying, for instance a behind the sofa table? Fabric coffee table-ottoman? Will you be moving the tv and getting a bigger console for underneath it? We need some direction from you as to what you are thinking so far and what is possible. :)

First of all you should pick a style and commit to it. Go from there.

This is the preferred arrangement for your room, IMO, with the TV on the wall and the mirror over the fireplace. And here are some furniture pieces and pillows for you to consider. Ottoman from West Elm, sofa table from Crate and Barrel, pillows from Pottery Barn.

What about a larger entertainment center where you can put some vases, art glass, books etc. ? I would also do a larger round (maybe with a PB type print or script) ottoman to offset all the rectangles in the room.

I would suggest a round wood and glass coffee table. One with the built in ottomans below which offer a place for many to put up their feet. The room could use two chairs, preferably in a pattern that picks the brown in the sofa. Window treatments with some color would also liven up the room. Don't be afraid of bold brights. The style of this sectional could go either way, with modern or classic/traditional decor. Always consider comfort and function first, then add the rest. Good luck.
