Marilyn, I too love the lights and the application. My lighting person though is really discouraging the use of pendants in the bath. Can you help and explain why this work so well. How did you decide on the placement? Thank you

Great question...

When looking at lighting for a bath application there are some things to consider. When you're looking at pendants, any light even, you need to look for how its rated. For a bathroom use you should get a "damp" rated fixture, especially depending on how well your bath vents.

The shower in the bathroom is catty-corner from the vanity. It's is surrounded all the way around, including the glass shower door. The shower has a recessed light fixture with built-in vent in it. The bath also has a couple windows. It's got several places for the moist air to go.

Typically if using a pendant in a bath, I try and find an outdoor pendant. We could't find one that we liked with this aesthetic, so we went with these Feiss pendants, since the bathroom was well vented.

As for placement, the idea was to keep the pendants out of the way of the person using the sink, but to bring them low enough so that they create light at either side of the face vs. lights from above. I typically like to do sconces or pendants like this, in the master bathroom. Due to budget on this project we kept the sconces to 3 and did even spacing. We could have also done 2 pendants per sink. The three lights seemed to feel better with the aesthetic.

An added note about vanity lighting:

Lighting the sides of the face reduces the dark shadows that are created by standing under the light. Whether shaving or applying makeup, this gives the person standing at the sink and looking in the mirror a better distribution of light across their face. As an added note here, be mindful of the type of bulb. I stay away from CFLs around a vanity. Using either an incandescent or warm LED really makes you look at feel best while getting ready in the morning!

Those pendants and their placement really is aesthetically pleasing. I love the way they reflect in the mirror giving the illusion of more pendants and more light.
