What are your counters?

We are going with back granite on the white and a lighter more decorative granite on the black island.

I said black backsplash but it's actually going to be marble.

Ceramic tile is hard on the feet and legs if you spend much time in your kitchen. I think the natural wood floor is the best choice.

The tile is a luxury vinyl tile so it will be softer and durable. I do also love the hardwood.

In that case, I think the darker tile would be attractive. The only consideration is that the gray makes for a cooler palette in the room whereby the wood warms up the look.

Love both the tiles, but I think the lines are more of an issue than the color. Either color would be very nice. When you picked out the tile, did they give you a catalog with pics of rooms with the different kinds of tile? Look at the tile with the lines and be sure that is the look you want.

Continue the wood into the kitchen, more uniform, elegant, warm

Wood in a kitchen is too much maintenance. I got porcelain tiles that look like wood.

Other than wiping up spills right away, why do people always say wood is too high maintenance in a kitchen? Are they worried appliances will leak?

Of course, if you see the spills right away on the wood floors, you can wipe them up. Perfect for a single lady; not perfect having a husband, 4 sons, and 5 grandchildren. And yes, dishwashers leak, sinks leak. I'm not spending MY life in the kitchen with mop in hand. Having had wood in 2 rooms of the house, they also have to be refinished every so often which is costly and time consuming, not to mention having to leave the house for a couple of days. Wood is over rated.

You will have many more decorating options if you continue with the wood. It will warm up the room. I had porcelain tiles in a kitchen, if you drop something heavy they chip and crack.

I'm a fan of porcelain tile in the kitchen. I like your lighter choice on the right. Choose at least an 18" tile if possible. A bigger tile will give you a more current, upscale look.

I think we are considering carrying the wood through - we are going to consult an installer. Thanks for the great advice.

Drop something on wood floor, and it dents the wood. Not to mention women walking in their heels.

Stone is rugged and low maintenance, but it can be hard on your back and legs if you stand to work in the kitchen for long periods.

We have wood in the kitchen but only because of our open floor plan. Coming from a vinyl kitchen floor in my old house (after 25 yrs) even the wood is hard on my feet...I can't imagine what tile would be like. I like the lighter grey vinyl tile...it will show less dirt.

Agree that wood is definitely overrated (as one per person stated it).

When we were searching for our house here in TX, that was too on our list. Dark hardwoods... A must have! Well, I got my hardwoods (we found a house that has wood floors everywhere but the bedrooms)... And I wish we would have found a home with tile or paid less for one with carpet then done the wood plank look-alike tiles.

They are way too much maintenance, way too fragile, and you have to be so careful in everything you do.

That said, and based on your cabinet and counter description... I would do the dark tile. :)

@dawnstrazzeri.. I LOVE the porcelain tiles you installed! Exactly what I showed hubby we will be doing for our next home or if we ever decide to upgrade our current.

You are getting a mixed bag of advice. Each of your samples would look very nice and none would be a mistake so it boils down to what appeals to you. Let us know.

Assume you are trying to match wood flooring from room to room and that's why you wont go with a wood porcelain tile? We just opened up our kitchen to the dining room and used the same oak in the kitchen and it looks beautiful and consistent but it dented when we moved fridge, the dishwasher leaked after install and the floor warped (luckily it went down after about one month), dropped utensils and heels leave marks and I am a lunatic whenever something spills. Our house is from the 20s and the kitchen has white cabinets with black counters so we wanted the floor to be period (was originally oak) and we needed some warmth in terms of colors and the floor definitely does that and unites the rooms, but it is high maintenance compared to wood elsewhere throughout the house which doesn't get the level of abuse. We made sure the back door into the mudroom right off the kitchen, got tile floor in the reno.
