What if you changed out your light fixture, for contemporary halogen track lighting?

I would recommend repainting in a lower sheen paint (from the picture it looks like when the light is on, the high-gloss walls are drawing attention to themselves). Then put something to draw the eye to either end of the hallway - for instance hang a mirror or a piece of art on the door at the end, or set up a dresser with a lovely vignette in the room on either end. I would also replace the single light fixture with a few smaller fixtures or recessed lighting. All of this will help draw the eye to the end goal (bedroom) rather than distracting it along the way and causing you to focus on the hallway.

If you have a one story house, you can install tubular skylights (like Solatubes). We did that with a similar hallway in our previous house, and it made a huge difference.

Take out the one light fixture and replace it with a few recessed lights.
