Back splash and colors

We recently put in a back splash, and we aren't sure if it works with our floor tile, counter tops, and black appliances. It makes our kitchen appear darker. We are looking for help with decor and paint colors and any other advice that would make it all come together.

You can add under cabinet lighting ....

    And over cabinet up lights...

cant really see with your pic but does the backsplash have any of the hues/tones of the floor tiles in them or are they a more grey/black... if so, i think all you need to do is bring the grey tones into the floor level by introducing a greyish type floor mat instead of your red-ish one you have infront of the stove... if they do have the undertones of the tiles all you'll need is the undermounted lights to brighten it up a little. :) hope this helps

The lighting idea is great! I didn't even think about it. Thanks! The hues in the back splash are a light green, grey, tile pieces, and brown. Hopefully the pic attached shows it clearly. Any ideas on paint color? Thanks so much!

I also definitely like the grey floor mat idea. Would a grey color of paint work for the wall?
yeah i definatly think a grey wall colour would work - obviously depending on what the rest of your house is like. something like 'storm' by benjamin moore? possibly lighter - would have to get samples and try?
actually would need to be lighter given the strong clours in your kitchen already=...

I think it is an undertone issue you are seeing - floor tile and cabinets is orange while backsplash is green. I would try holding up a green grey paint sample to see if that pulls it a bit more together.

if your thinking a more green grey id suggest revere pewter:?

i dont think it looks old fashioned. everybody has different taste and if she likes it then thats all that matters? hence: 'looking for advice to make it all come together'

Evie, thanks so much for the paint samples and ideas. We are in our 30s, so I hope it doesn't look old fashioned. :/. My husband did all of the work to put it in, so pulling it out is not an option at this point. I also think I'm going to pull the orange decor and change it to a different color and pull the painting from the wall.

Paint the wall next to the cabinet and it will balance the large dark cabinet piece out more. Grey.

You could take a look at Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. It can read more like this, a light taupey shade with gray/ green, depending on where it is.

Nix the grey and go with one of the creamy colors in the backsplash. Keep your kitchen clutter to a bare minimum and put a fantastic piece of art to the right of the cabinets. Keep it simple. No, we don't love the backsplash, but it's there now and not horrible, just keep everything around it simple.

PS Take the towels off the oven door handle. THAT'S not only old fashioned, it is just awful.
I know it is convenient, but it is not attractive in the least. And lighten up the towel colors while you are at it or pop an unexpected color like turquoise or bright green and then add a beautiful plant somewhere. A real plant! Just look at the pop the watermelon gives the space just sitting there on the stove and you'll see what we mean about adding green. :)

Jastites - I think the kitchen looks very nice.... you choose these items and liked them enough to purchase.... now you just need things to pull it together.. I don't think this feels old fashioned at all - eveything is subjective as to where you live and your own influences.... I do agree with most people here - you need to paint.... find a more saturated color - you could do grey but it needs to be mixed with a beige or cream to blend between the grey in the backsplash and the golden undertones of your cabinets or a green/beige color would flatter the cabinets and floor.....The lighting is critical and often overlooked in most kitchens - undercabinet is a must for this space and you can simply have an electrician put an outlet on top of the cabinets, controled by a switch and just plug in some rope lighting - inexpensive way to up light the kitchen.... you can also put recessed lighting in - make sure it is approx.18" from wall to center of fixture - that will give you wall wash effect down the front of the cabinets.... I would get some beautiful hardware for the cabinets as well. I don't mind the towels on the stove handle but they are the wrong color ( pull from the colors in your backsplash ). I do like floor mats in the kitchen, but I think this one is a little too small and wrong color.... go bigger or consider a runner and again try to pull some color out of the backsplash. These items will all need to include an accent color - that bold pop of drama every space needs... I agree with Decorative Philosophy about the watermelon.... green, turquoise, and in this case even a beautiful Ivory would pop.....
Remember - if you love it that's all that matters! Buy paint samples to try.... if you paint and hate it, you can easily redo it.... go to your local Good Will or Salvation Army to get a few inexpensive bowls or decorative containers in different colors to see what you like that way you aren't making a big investment in anything.... Most of all - Have fun and be daring!
    Good luck!

Thanks all so much! The orange color in the kitchen now is pre back splash, so I had planned on changing this anyways. I think I would like to paint it the gray/green color and add some greens into the decor. The towels are no big deal...I can nix them, but I do live in my house and use them quite often. My main issue was trying to figure out a color scheme, but now I have a better idea. I will also look into establishing more lighting. All comments have been helpful and appreciated!

Undercabinet lighting, we used LED from Dals. Fantastic Canadian product, we love it!
