Basement walls

We are updating our basement and need to find something besides paneling for the walls. The basement is not wet but has a damp smell; what would be good for the walls to help alleviate this problem?

Correcting the exterior drainage and waterproofing needs to happen first or you're just wasting money and time.

Do you have foundation cracks?
Exterior insulation?

What's under your slab?
Do you have exterior drain tiles?
Interior drain tiles?
Sump pump?
Dehumidifier?
Are you running the A/C?
