I have painted a lot of these monoliths. One option, just use the wall color. The texture of the rock will still make it visually a fireplace. Second option, do a faux wash of slightly darker shades over the rocks on top of that paint. Then it will pop up a little more. Either way, the fireplace will no longer be the first thing you see in the room and it will be a lot less money than removing the stone.
