I see how it is a bit daunting choosing between the thousands of tile types so I have a few questions I would ask myself if I were in your shoes.
1. What colours do you love?
2. What colours do you hate?
3. Is there something you have or have seen that will help you decide your colour inspiration?
4. Is there a particular look, style or theme you want to create here?
5. How exactly do you use this room? (how many people use it? Is it a high traffic zone?etc)
6. What is you budget?

One you have established these, you can come up with a good idea.

If you decide that you might want to go for the same tile, that'd be great - the way to define a seperate area could be as simple and effective as adding a thin, slip proof rug that doesn't cover the entire dining area, but defines it.

Make sure it is a non slip floor - if it is used for the kitchen, this is a safety hazard not to be skipped. This is also true in the dining area for three reasons.
A) Kids run. Fast.
B) Me, in heels + slippery floor = shame for me, laughs for you
C) You, in formal shoes, maybe in socks - wet floor, spills, etc.

What are you current tile options? Remember to think about your cabinets and hardware too!

Also, I noticed in your idea book that the kitchen style you like is very industrial, a personal favourite of mine, so I might even suggest a parquet floor (cheaper substitutes are always available, if your budget is a bit tighter) with a raw and unrefined finish. It could be a beautiful contrast with stainless steel, pure white kitchen back splash tiling and any other defining metals you have in there. Just a suggestion.

I agree that your flooring should be consistent, and carpet in the dining area could become stained easily. One of the kitchen photos in your idea book has hardwood floors. Would you consider that for both areas?
