Interior Designers & House Decorators Near Grand Rapids

The Challenge: The client wanted to update a kitchen originally renovated in the 1970s to better reflect the home’s historical character. The layout presented a few constraints: limited space for cabinetry, fixed window and door placements, and the need to maintain the exterior appearance due to Heritage Hill Historical Society guidelines. Additionally, the homeowners had some original cabinetry they wished to preserve or reuse, which added another layer of complexity. After exploring several layout options, we ultimately arrived at a design that balanced both functionality and historical integrity. Finishes and Flooring: Once the layout was finalized, we moved on to finish selections. The biggest challenge here was the flooring. While the client initially preferred a large-format tile, the age of the home and previous additions had left the floor uneven and unsuitable for such materials. Thankfully, the contractor was able to level the floor, making tile installation possible. Interestingly, the client had originally chosen a different tile, but due to long lead times, she had to make a last-minute change—and in doing so, discovered the stunning flooring you see in the photos. A happy accident that truly elevated the space! It was a pleasure working on this beautiful historic home—and even more so with such wonderful homeowners.

We transformed the sunroom and living room of our client’s stunning home, where our Full-Service design services brought our client's vision to life. Through our detailed Client Questionnaire, we discovered a desire for a neutral space with pops of color (red, orange, green), inspired by a painting of colorful flowers and fruit from Paris, a cherished piece from their travels. This artwork set the tone for the accent fabrics, creating a vibrant yet harmonious palette. We space-planned both rooms to optimize functionality and flow with upholstered furnishings, all custom-made in America to ensure quality and craftsmanship. The sunroom was transformed with a new sofa, two chairs, and two ottomans. For the living room, we selected two sofas, an ottoman, and a swivel chair, each chosen to complement the space and enhance comfort. Every piece was carefully chosen and placed to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. Considering the playful presence of an energetic dog, we selected durable fabrics that could withstand daily life while maintaining elegance. A luxurious wool carpet was chosen to add comfort and sophistication, complementing the overall design. Beautiful traditional-inspired rugs were selected for the entryway and dining room. Enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of the space, we introduced a new light fixture for the sunroom, along with new end tables, lamps, and a striking woven leather cabinet for the living room, creating focal points that blend seamlessly with the design. Once all the major pieces were in place, we offered Styling Services to complete the look with accessories and plants. To complete the look, we curated accessories that added personality and charm, infusing the space with a sense of warmth and character.

After moving into their 1920's traditional style home, our client quickly realized they needed a complete redesign of their living room and sunroom. The goal was to create spaces that accommodated seating for family movie nights, as well as entertaining groups of friends and colleagues. The large and long living room was designed with three seating areas, the first nestled beneath the front windows, the second clustered around the fireplace and the third at the opposite end of the room for a corner sectional and game table. The high contrast between white and blue green gives a modern twist to a space with traditional historic detailing. This room is very much a kids' space, despite its glamorous appeal, with all stain treated fabrics and board games stowed away in the armoire. The Sunroom provided a unique furniture planning challenge, being long and skinny, it made the most sense to design a custom sofa to accommodate the proper scale and desire for comfort. Many architectural upgrades were made in this project including new windows, tile, and radiant heat.
