Inspired by Mid-Century Modern we brainstormed to turn this drab 1980 kitchen into a contemporary focal point. The client desired an open layout; however, a structural beam impeded the ability to remove the sink wall. To achieve this look, we removed as much of the wall as possible, only leaving what was structurally necessary. This gives full view of the living room and an open airy feel to the room. For the cabinetry, the client wanted multiple styles mixed together. This was accomplished with the base cabinets in a simple recessed door style with a taupe glazed finish which complements yet contrasts the high-gloss white slab door wall cabinets, and dark cherry stained refrigerator surround. This tri-color scheme surely makes the kitchen unique and creates a fun interesting look. We completed the look with Taj Mahal quartzite countertop. More storage was on the list for this 131 square foot kitchen, to achieve this a large island with an elevated microwave cabinet with deep drawer below, and two 3 drawer base cabinets to hold all kitchen essentials beautifully out of everyday sight but easily accessible at arm’s reach. By removing the built in pantry we gained additional countertop workspace while still keeping plenty of food storage by adding a tall pantry pull out and enclosing the refrigerator perspective. For a pop of color we tiled the backsplash with a petal-shaped blue, grey, and white glass tile. Despite being a small kitchen, this space came together to create a big statement.
