Need help with kitchen layout

We're remodelling my mom's 1940's house (kitchen & bathroom). We took out a chimney, knocked down some walls & gutted everything. She had a pantry with just a few cupboards, & the "kitchen" had a stove, fridge & table & chairs.

We're trying to improve the layout! Problem is we have a fridge with double doors (3'1" wide). The space it's going in was the front entrance (we cancelled the door) We "thought" we could fit the fridge in that space, BUT then will it look funny b/c it's not aligned with the cupboards ? Also, NO idea where to fit a stove. IF we put it next to the fridge, will we be able to open the fridge doors ??

You have more work to do on this. I could be more helpful if I could see an overall floor plan, but can offer a few comments:
You need 42" all the way around an island. I see 36" on one side.
Cancelling the front entrance is a big move - are you sure about that? There may be other ways to design your kitchen!
The angled cut you have on the end of the cabinet run is a poor idea, as angles always lose space.

If you have the cash, going to a kitchen designer would be the best option. They know how to lay it out so everything fits! :)

You don't really need lots of cash for a kitchen designer, many offer free design with purchase of cabinets.

We're in a rural area, I don't know of any kitchen designers sorry! We have another front door & put in a patio door in the back of the house so we have the required 2 entrances.

The front entrance was never used, it was just a small space that was always cold. (no insulation at ALL in this house, which is why we tore down the plaster).

The living room is on the left of kitchen, entrance is on the right. The space below is empty (the old pantry 9'x10') - that's where we'll put a table & where the patio door is (great ocean view).

Hubby just wanted 3' around the island, I insisted on 42". Is 42" better or is 36" enough ?

Per code, the requirement is only 36", however, I agree that 42" would make the space be more functional and practical in the long run. I would like to suggest that if you haven't done so already, do consult with a professional. A low commitment / cost consultation can be what you need!

42" is the standard, 36" will feel tight.
