Painting Stair Risers

Hi all. My wife and I are thinking of sprucing up our staircases by sanding down and painting our risers. Two quick questions. We're thinking of painting them the same color white as our trim. Is that typical/acceptable? Also, the trim is gloss. Could we get away with using semi-gloss on our risers? Thanks.
