Wonderful Shake siding!

Can you tell us what is the material you used for the shake siding (real wood, cement fiber, other composite, slate)? How did you obtain so many shade of grey?
Thank you

We used leftover Cedar shakes and re-stained them with semitransparent charcoal stain.
The stain was only stirred every couple of days in order for the pigment to settle and produce the colour variations.

Can you tell me please what material the horizontal siding is? Is it a wood channel siding, hardy board?

It is hardi Board. It was done in a horizontal board and batten style with the small batten pieces behind the the boards on top of a rain screen. Each wide board was surface nailed and then filled and painted. Each joint was caulked to slow water penetration and deterioration. It was a real pain, but the effect is worth it.
