Adding a portico - any reason NOT to do so?

The railing around our front door needs to be replaced - it's starting to rot. We are considering instead of keeping the railing, adding a portico like this:

The front of the house faces due west, which mean this time of year, the afternoon/early evening sun is beating against our front door. Literally, the door handle will be almost too hot to touch by late in the afternoon! I like the idea of a portico to protect the front door (once during a very heavy driving rain this spring, we did get a little water under the front door), but also for shelter (guest won't have to stand out in the weather, and neither would packages, etc.).

I feel like a portico like the one attached would be in keeping with the style of the house. We have an arched transom/fanlight above the door, so I feel like the arch would be in keeping with the arched themes.

Before we potentially screw up the facade of our house, any professionals out there disagree with adding a portico, or with the style I have selected?

By the way, in case it makes a difference, the house is located in NC.

Cindy....beautiful home....your inspiration picture looks beautiful and makes sense. One of the blogs I read actually posted today about adding a porch to a home very similar to yours......BetweenNapsonthePorch.....

I'm sure some of the pros will give you some good information.

PS....where are you in NC?.....I grew up in Jacksonville! and have a sister in Lexington.

I can't see any reason not to, it would add function and a nice presence to the entry.

BamaMom - we are outside if Winston-Salem, so only maybe 20 mins to Lexington. We moved here exactly a year ago...from AL - I am assuming you have a kid at Bama? ;-) We lived in Fairhope, AL for 5-1/2 years. But thanks for the tip about that blog! That's pretty much what I want to do, but probably not as what they added. We would LOVE to have a huge porch across the entire front, but that is on our "long term" project list. Thanks!

Would be nice.....check on front yard zoning setback to make sure this is not an issue.

Thanks! I'll check on the zoning, but I don't think we'll have to worry about a setback. We're in a fairly rural area (the house sits in the middle of 7 acres).

Thank you Jennifer!! The previous owners didn't seem to do too much with the landscaping, or exterior of the house. They maintained it, but that was about it. Over the last year we've been slowly freshening up the interior, but now it's starting to be time to move to the outside (new landscaping is on the mile-long project list too!) I hadn't really considered railing - a Chippendale railing like this:

I think I like it!! Enjoy Sunset Beach! I have heard good things about that & Ocean Isle. Isle of Palms (near Charleston) used to a favorite when we lived in NoVa.

Your house is lovely and I think a portico will look great. We have a brick portico on our colonial that we love; I don't know if you ever considered that as an option.

I think it would look great. You have a nice color scheme already established for the exterior of your home so it should be a nice and easy project.
