Hi tlew303, do you have a larger sized photo ? it's hard to see what's going on.

Paint the front door a colour that pops: your favourite colour or yellow or the same green as the lawn in high gloss paint. Beware of not fighting the brick. I don't know about the shutters, they might be "contrived": unify your hedges and put flower boxes of the same colour as the door, that you will enjoy planting flowers in. Good luck, Swissgirl

Front door: fire engine red, Shutters: black, Window boxes: white and fresh coat of white paint on all trim. Place a black urn planter in front of white door sidelight. Plant boxwood to complete this classic look. Consider painting the brick a light grey/green or taupe.

I agree - paint the brick. I like the colors above or a muted white. Then you will not have a problem making colors pop. Consider the neighborhood - what colors are neighbors using? Choose another, but complimentary.

And while you are spending money - do you need a nice walkway to your door?

I think the basic classic black shutter or dark gray (color may be in your brick) white trim and white flower box. Same with the door, black with white trim will look crisp and classic. I don't think a red door would show up. Good luck!

Thoroughly clean brick. Remove straggly bushes/trees. dig out and replace yellowed lawn, or widen flower beds. Reface concrete porch and steps w/slate, from porch meandering down to the sidewalk.
Shutters in bright white...and front door painted a shiny pop of color! (Turquoise?) Different sizes/shapes of brightly colored pots of brightly hued flowers. small flowering shrubs in beds. Border plants in front. Nothing (plants, shrubs, etc) touching the house.

No shutters. Strip down and go with the bones of the house and era but with an update. Charcol grey/green door -high gloss ( to compliment the red brick). Interesting and unusual lighting fixture (sputnik lamp, large globe.. whatever) over the door, angular planter with height - something like you see in DWR - maybe in lime green- by the sidelight; possibly loose the white trim choosing a lighter shade of the door color - but keep them muted. Make a contemporary statement/ not a classic attempt and keep the neighborhood interesting. BB Studios

same type, same size, no spaces. Thats a LOT of maintience, that is why I suggested removing all plants that touch the house/garage...and go w/new plantings...would showcase the house vs having the eyes drawn to the skimpy trees/schrubs.

All of the interesting comments and questions lead me to posting a wider shot of the house. You can see the problematic slope to the left with a side entry, basement level garage. The remaining shrubs are coming out and the red/tan brick steps with a large 12 X 8 landing have been added.
