BM White Dove? I don't see a Dove white in BM samples.

Lovely inspo. Why not just paint the whole room, ceiling and walls with the BM White Dove, same with cabinets in a different sheen and choose a backsplash tile you love.

Here is a great article about selecting tiles to compliment BM White Dove.

    https://www.artistictile.com/collections/backsplash-tile-to-match-white-dove-cabinets

Lighting has as much influence as the tiles and colors on the final look and feel.

    As does the flooring color.

What is the flooring in the kitchen? As Lyn has commented above, it will impact the color selection for your cabinets + backsplash.

I would also think about making a change to the existing desk area as part of this update. You could have doors or drawers added under the desk area in order to add more storage.

Do a search for "ways to repurpose an existing kitchen desk area" for some ideas:

Lyn/ dani.. I edited the photo above to see the flooring.. the kitchen isnt quite as dark as it shows.. but YES I would like it to look brighter :) .

To be honest, I don't see that repainting white cabinets white, and adding a diamond shaped white tile is going to do much for the look of your kitchen. You will be spending a fair amount of money for not a lot of change. As they say, the juice won't be worth the squeeze.

Maybe pick an actual color for the cabinets or backsplash? And personally I'd change out the speckly granite, which is way more dated than your cabinets or backsplash.

Why do you want to re-paint the cabinets pretty much the same color as they are now? Are they damaged or something? If they're not damaged, what's the point?

I think the granite and cabinets look nice together now and they don't seem to be fighting with the floor. What is dragging the space down is the sad wall color -- freshen that up to something light and airy, change out the backsplash to a soft white that coordinates with the cabinets and granite nd boom! instant refresh, you're done without spending a lot of money.

FWIW, I am not a fan of diamond pattern tile -- too fussy.

I do not agree the granite is the dated item at all. I love that granite it beats every piece of fake plastic stone you will find. It looks good with the floors and the cabinet color.I do not like the choice for the new backsplash it is too busy with that granite . I like porchops ideas and so much more afforadble than painting the cabinets. . Change the lighting to LED 4000K and make sure all the under cabinet lighting is that same 4000K and be done

I wouldn't go from one white to another, unless the current doors are worn/damaged and it doesn't show in the photos.

Changing the wall paint color and backsplash is where I would start.

Hi so here are some questions.

1 . .It appears your current cabinets are thermofoil? Melamine?

    2. When you say replace the cabinet doors have you done a thorough cost comparison between replacing the doors only and just getting new cabinets?

3 . Other than the cabinet doors and backsplash is the rest of the kitchen working for you as is?

    4. Do you use the desk area or has it become a catch all?

In regards to the selections on color and tile you show. They are perfectly fine and will work well.

However I do think there is some room for improvement.

1 I would take the cabinets to the ceiling. No reason for that space. If you keep the existing cabinets i would speak to someone about adding cabinet face and trim and crown like this

It doesn't appear that you have enough room to do an upper cabinet there so the above will be a game changer.

    2. The desk I would look into raising that area to counter height and taking the counter across it and doing drawers under it or it might be a nice place for a wine or beverage fridge is that is something you would use. The drop down to the desk area really dates the space. Especially if you arent sitting there and using it as a desk which since there is no chair there leads me to believe you arent. So now it is just a low catch all counter and wasted space. If you do not want to raise the counter height there consider adding cabinetry down to the lower counter height and drawers under it to create a hutch area . that was done in the photo below. Notice ther drop down of counter height.

3 the fridge is too deep for the exisiting cabinet. Standard depth in a cabinet depth cabinet. If you need the regular depth fridge i would modify you caninets in that area to fit it.

Design Interior South... We spoke with a lady and we had plans to go up to the ceiling yes.. I did a sort of a AI thingy so you can sort of see what I had plans to do..

The only thing is we will not have the granite on the right there where the desk WAS.. we would add the cabinet.. at least that was what I was hoping to do and I was hoping I would be going in the right direction and absolutely we had plans on doing it to the ceiling. I Absolutely need to redo my cabinets as they are 30 years old and especially near the sink area where my hands have touched the cabinets the cabinet door has sort of swelled and I dont like it.. its old and needs to be replaced...The tv screen there in the corner has to stay as we use it to watch tv at dinner and it is a security all around cam... I have a budget that I am sort of trying to stick to but the lady who gave me a price I thought was pretty high to just have the cabinet doors redone and a bit of cabinetry added.. I also want to get rid of the tile because I think it makes the kitchen look dark.. I was hoping to find some colors that went well together.. and that is what I am trying to do... (the granite in this photo above isnt exactly like mine as AI sort of changed it... I think I am going to get a few quotes and hope I can basically brighten the kitchen and refresh it a bit along with put the cabinets to the ceiling..

The rest of the kitchen works well.. And just adding 2 cabinets because there is another one on the other side of the fridge that we were going to do basically the same as where the desk was.. Its a smaller rancher style home so we dont have a huge amount of space to rip out walls etc..

I was also thinking of maybe putting in a small sort of decorative cabinet door in the very corner of the kitchen there above the tv screen..

And I do love that moulding style you posted! Thank you!!!

Patricia.. Yes I had no plans of changing the granite if possible.. that cost me a fair bit of money and I also agree that if I could find some nice tile that goes well with it.. (I have trouble with colors and sort of need help there) . And because we are going to put in a pantry sort of cabinet on the far right of the kitchen we have to take out the counter piece to the left of the desk and get it cut and put back as it does over hang .. so we need to be able to add that cabinetry there in that space.. yes some people think the granite is a dated thing.. but I still like it and I think it just needs a bit of help (tile)

Porkchop.. yes some of the cabinety is damaged as it is 30 years old.. (where my wet hand have touched the cabinet.. it has swelled and of course the side panel looks aweful) . They have done there job.. they just need a face lift :) . Like me lol ... The rest of my home is painted in Edgecomb grey BM. so I was thinking of using that same color because I can see what you see and I LOVE a light and bright kitchen.. (the photo actually does make it look darker than it actually is.. but I want it lighter.. I AGREE! And I apologize.. dove white :)

Do you think something like this would be better? (tile)

Lyn .. Unfortunately I dont know the name of the flooring.. I had it done pretty much through out the house except for the bedrooms and when I picked it.. I brought it home and hit it with a hammer and threw it in a sink of water overnight and it is durable! It was super hard for me to pick the flooring.. and we just did it a few years back.. it basically has held up well .. it was basically sort of a click together..

You have fiberboard cabs if they swell w/water. if your bases are in good shape, refacing is a good idea.

Do NOT use home depot to reface! I hope you've found a company that specializes in kitchens/cabinet painting.

make SURE to get solid wood doors w/center panel MDF. have them show you what the refaced door looks like before it's painted.

should be something like this. a paint grade maple

Also, determine how they paint and what they paint with.

A good paint job is not cheap. The reason it's not cheap is all of the steps.

Are they going to use a pre-cat lacquer?

I had mine done 8 yrs ago w/custom wood cabs. I decided to reface because I wanted the shaker style to match all of the drawers

    the tops ones did not.

they sprayed everything off site (not the base obviously) w/a pre cat lacquer one shade brighter than Simply White.

to reface everything was an add'tl 2K. pretty good deal. (but my paint job was not cheap!) they're all solid maple rails/stiles w/an MDF center panel. perfect for painting.

I'd reface this island or replace it if you can lift off that countertop piece.

think about trimming it out if you cannot replace the entire thing

do the same to the ends of your cabinets so they match

please rethink White Dove. it's dingy.

I had to repaint all of my walls after using White Dove. hated it. redid the walls in SimplyWhite eggshell, and all of the baseboard and crown in the same in semi gloss. matches the cabinet color perfectly.

have a sample painted w/simply white (if they use a lacquer they will have to match it unless BM makes a pre-cat in that shade)

I will say after 8 yrs I don't have peeling or chipping. prepping is everything, so make sure they use a good primer and do a find sanding after that primer before spraying.

Beth H. I am absolutely not set on Dove white.. I need help picking the color for sure!

    Your kitchen turned out lovely!

I was going to use a interior designer but her fees were so high.. I HOPE the kitchen place who gives quotes would know colors more than me :) .

And yes I am absolutely going to reface that end of the island.. Thank you for all your advice.. I appreciate the help!!

Golden Bird I think you are on the right track. I do urge you to follow Beths advice on hiring someone who knows how to correctly paint and reface the cabinets. If you can I would pick out your cabinet color, you counters and your backsplash all at the same time. Don't have your cabinets painted then go and try to find the other elements becauswe then you are stuck. Did you ask the Interior Designer if she had a Designer for a day package she could offer you? Those are generally a flat fee and they will help you with whatever they can fit into a half day or full day depending on which one you choose.

Design interior south.. No I didnt ask her about that.. she I guess goes off a percentage of the job.. and with her fee it was $30,000 .. $5000 was for her.. I thought that was a bit steep.. I mean I guess she was organizing the jobbers and the tile, the electrican.. but really all I needed is some help picking tile and cabinet color as I am keeping the counter top.. Also my husband knows electrical .. that could save us money.. I would just need the doors refaced, and 2 new cabinets rebuilt as we are making the one over the desk and one beside the fridge... My husband has done tile work before and it was beautifully done.. so we really dont need the trades for that.. I am going to get a couple more quotes and see where we are. I am in Canada so if you are in the states it might be a different price.. but dont you think thats a tad steep? I could be wrong?

Only you know what you are willing to pay......but her fee is less than 20% which is actually on the average to low end of Interior Designers pricing.

Design Interior south.. Ok great.. thank you.. I mean I have no idea.. I am planning on getting at least one more quote and then decide from there.. but I DO want someone who knows colors better than i.. as I do notice in those photos I posted above on the tile/cabinet.. the cabinet color either throws a green tinge or a pink.. I want to make the kitchen warm with more light and get rid of the tile for sure so I want expert help there.. If your going to put out the money.. I want it done right and to look nice. And she told me not to do a crisp white.. which I originally wanted to go..

I understood you were paint the cabinets not actaully getting new doors to replace damaged ones . Yes to getting help with colors but honestly many decent paint shops can help choose color if you bring a sample of the floor and the granite . For me I would tryt o match the lightest color in the granite that might not be a pure white at all.

Patricia.. Yes I am removing the doors and putting new painted fronts along with the 2 cabinets .. one where the desk was and one on the other side of the fridge.. all to the ceiling.. and yes I am hoping to match exactly what you said.. the whitest part of the granite.. which I guess would be a creamier white? My husband is going to redo the tile which would save us a bit.. he did the tile that is on the wall now.. he did do a beautiful tidy job.. its just NOT the right color choice.. and I know that.. its dark.. (mindu the photo does make it look darker) I dont want to make a mistake.. so I need ideas.. we also have to move some of the electrical.. which again my husband can do.. I am wondering if I should even paint the little bit of the room a bit lighter than the edgecomb grey that is in the rest of the home (except the kitchen) . I had a girl come out from BM and pick colors for me for the house a few years back.. I think the kitchen was BM Stone Hearth.. Im wondering if I should just wait it Edgecomb or try and go for an even one shade lighter color maybe .. because it is a north/east room

The flooring looks great, a nice contrast to a crisp white cabinet.

Everyone sees white differently. The lighting in your space is different from any others.

I personally love a high reflective white paint in a kitchen. I want to see what I am cooking. without lights on all the time. A kitchen never stays stark white for long, once life takes over.

It won't look like an operating room unless you install severe light bulbs. It's your home, do what you want.

    golden,

Try this link for starters, if you read some of the other articles on her blog she has tons of info on white paints and coordinating colors based on window and light direction.

she also has online color consult, which I'm sure would be cheaper than 5k. (but that price isn't bad if shes coordinating and handling the painters, the colors, tile options, etc)

So I was thinking of getting rid of my table set

And add buying this one? I have a very tight area there.. right now my table is 54" 1/2 x 35 1/2" and this table.. without the leaf that is shown in the photo is 42" x 42".. do you think this would be better .. it is wider which worries me a little.. but what do you ladies think? (I just dont like the dark wood in there.. I was thinking of doing something like this? but no leaf in the table as I stated above? Its an antique white set...

  • PRO

What are the measurements of the table areas? How many people do you seat here on a regular basis? Is there a secondary dining area you use when there is company over? Is there a reason you are choosing a bar height table and chairs? First , Visually they take up more space than a normal height table would. Second they are a very dated look and really only belong in a bar/restaurant setting. I think a cute small round table would be better. Think bistro set. Or if you need to fit more people in I would consider building in banquet seating so you can off center the table and give yourself more room.

    last modified: 20 days ago

Yes I have a dining room.. I dont really entertain often but when I do we always move to the dining room

There are 3 of us in our home.. I guess I have always liked that style.. but if I can find something similar in color that would be ok.. So you think the style I chose basically wouldnt work then? Try and find something more contempory maybe? (that table I posted is the same height as the dark table...... The kitchen area is tight like I mentioned its about 71" x 71"

I guess this photo would of been better.. if I can find something like this maybe?? And yes.. I know... I pick alot of beiges :)
Actually maybe this ? its the same size of my table I have now .. or does the style not work? I kinda like it in that area.. At least the chairs are padded and I like the table top color.. I dont know what you ladies think?

Jumping in late here. I see you're planning on adding a cabinet all the way down to the countertop where your desk is now. Are you thinking you'll be able to use the existing granite on the desk and have everything cut to fit and seamed with the piece to the left? Or will you be replacing that entire piece? Would it be more cost efficient to change it to a full length pantry with roll out shelves?

As far as backsplash, your best bet is to go somewhere and bring back a bunch of samples to view in your light. It's truly the only accurate way to get a good match. How far off your budget was the $30K?

    last modified: 20 days ago

Katinparadise... We were planning on taking the pce of ganite off ... if you are facing the desk.. we would take the piece to the left of the desk.. basically the piece right touching the stove and get it cut right at the stove side of the cut and put that piece back so it doesnt hang over anymore and the pce on the desk would be removed completely.. The cut would be on the left side of the granite pce so it just slides back where it was.. but over a bit,... we just want to be able to make the cabinet come straight down and you cant with the hang over to the left of that piece (if all that makes sense) I was HOPING to get it done for $25,000 .. we have now spoken to a kitchen shop and told her what we want and will see what their price comes out to... we told them we can remove the cabinet faces.. and she is giving us also a price with totally NEW cabinet boxes for the top because the other lady was just basically going to box in the top to the ceiling.. but there would be no shelf or anything there.. so when you opened the cabinet there would be sort of a blocked off part at the top.. I thought that could be kinda wierd too.. she said they do it all the time? ( I mean I dont know mayb $25,000 is not enough for this job but I am going to get a couple of quotes and decide.. ) . I can do $30,000 but I would prefer not to lol

Oh I guess I should explain why we want the rounded edge on the granite left.. because ,, I dont know if you can tell but the desk cabinet is about 4" back from the cabinet beside it .. if that makes sense.. :)

I agree with Design Interior South a round bistro set would look perfect there

Kay P.. the ONLY problem is.. that table I have there now is 35" wide.. and Most tables that are round are 42" round.. Im thinking that would make it a tad tight there.. unfortunately the builder made that area a little tighter than he should of.... I have an area measured approx 71" x 71" to put something there where you can pull out the chairs etc..

I think you need to center the chandelier more and just get a smaller table and chairs at a normal table height.

As far as the kitchen here is a visual for you. In your rendering you have a drywall soffit above the cabinets. I think it would look much nicer if you instead just had a finish carpenter come in and use moulding to built that area up like this . It will make your room feel larger and ceilings feel taller.

Those cabinets need more than a "facelift. They need full replacement. Especially to actually achieve the to the ceiling bit successfully.

I DO want someone who knows colors better than i.

You don't want someone who knows colors better than you: You want someone who is fantastic and specialized in selecting colors. Lots of cabinet sales people may know from years of selling cabinets - "Hey, people usually get this color cabinet with this color granite."

It sounds like you have a lot of great resources between your husband's skills and connections. You really don't need someone to GC this. But, I would pay separately to have a color consultation to get this right. A few thousand dollars may sound like a lot just to have someone select colors, but it is pretty reasonable compared to ending up having paid $30k for a kitchen that doesn't look right.

To compare costs, my friend had her kitchen cabinets refaced by Home Depot a year ago. Her kitchen is the same size and number of cabinets as yours. She got new very low end quartz countertops, backsplash, all cabinets refaced, did not have her uppers taken to the ceiling as you are doing, did not have any molding work, did not have any new cabinets built. It cost $26k USD.

I think the quote you received feels very inline as costs have gone up a lot in the past year, you are having cabinets taken to the ceiling, you are getting new cabinets installed where the desk is, and will need the counter reworked there.

You seem to have a sound plan and know what you're looking for. You're fortunate to have your husband's skills as well. I would compare pricing between all new uppers and just having them boxed in with molding as DIS suggested. My cabinets are 36" and I'm 5'6" and can barely reach the top shelf. I think you'll find you save money just boxing them in. Costs sure have changed since I did my kitchen 9 years ago. I got new granite, all new solid maple cabinets with lots of drawers and a few specialty features, new appliances and all labor for 22K. I hope you're able to get a bit closer to what you're comfortable spending.

Kendrah.. Im not really sure how I find someone who is FANTASTIC with colors... I wouldnt really know until they finish the job and I am over the moon with the selections...

Rainbow colors.. we are actually getting a price on redoing the uppers..

Design interiors.. I agree.. I love the mouldings up there.. instead of the boring.. :)

I would look at portfolios of color consultants and see who has done a good job. Then interview them on the phone. Then book the consultation.

I concur it is worthwhile to get a quote for boxing them in with molding.

@katinparadise - Yes, costs have gone up dramatically, but I think you had quite a deal even ten years ago.

If your goal is to have the kitchen look brighter, I would focus on lighting and decor rather than remodel. I do think molding would look nice on the cabinets, and perhaps a proper under cabinet light all the way around. https://seremodeling.com/how-to-remodel-a-kitchen

I don't have a great suggestion for color. If you want a bright kitchen, make sure your lighting is enough. All the white in the world can't fix bad lighting.

For the granite next to the new pantry - save the headache and possible damage of trying to cut that top and just put a filler in that space and leave the top alone.

    Good luck!

Mrs Pete... I know that tv screen isnt ideal.. but that is our security system around the house and we can switch to our tv.. so we can watch the news etc..

Under the cabinet lighting is there at the moment.. and is going to be changed to brigher lights also.. We also did buy new lights.. basically flush style for the ceiling which are ALOT brighter and you can change them to different lighting.. warmer etc.. I dont have a huge amount of space on the counter but I will try and add some decor once my kitchen is done as I agree with you.. but not too much clutter.. just something to dress it up..

Yeah. some people dont like my granite.. but I paid a bit of money for it and I absolutely am going to keep it . the mistake I made last time as I didnt have any help..

the above photo... I AI'd into my kitchen the tile we saw at a kitchen shop... what do you think of that..we both liked it..

We planned on painting the kitchen the same flow through color that comes from the family room, Edgecomb grey.. (it is currently another shade of Benjamin moore but a darker color.. I cant think of the color at the moment..

And that flooring will be staying.. its extremely durable and I like it..

Thank you for all your ideas.. I will print it off and keep it to reference to.. I appreciate your help :)
