It's not a trend IMO. It's a way to add interest when you have a larger kitchen with lots of wall cabinets, island etc. I absolutely love the new idea to have an island stand out from the rest of the cabinets. I think this option is here to stay. There are some trends from the past that I knew the moment I saw them it would never stay, and I was right with all of them. Think of a living room, is every piece of furniture in your room the exact same wood and exact same stain color? is every couch, chair, curtains, all the same color? no, you want things to be contrasting to help them stand out when they need to, as long as it's not over done

I don't think it's a trend. I am doing a kitchen remodel right now that has two colors of painted cabinets. The lower cabinets are charcoal gray and the uppers are a bluish green with gray undertones! Fabulous colors! A modern farmhouse look when you add brushed nickel drawer pulls and white marble countertops.
