If I were you I would definitely use it to the best of my abilities. Look for plants that don't require as much sunlight - maybe something that can creep over that wall a bit? Remove that crusty pot and add a beautiful water feature.

OR

you could follow that curve of the gate and create a structure that would cover that area in gorgeous vines and flowers that dont require too much sunlight. That way you have turned the place into a walkway of sorts. Add seating, fairy lights and a gorgeous water feature and LOOK AT THAT - it's your new favourite place to go!

Keep your slightly distressed walls, distressed. People love feeling like they're about to walk into a magical place.

I agree with the others depending on where u live hostas, bamboo groundcover, liriopie, and ferns are good for shade. There are interesting ferns like the one below.
