Well I am a very plain sort of a person and I don't like overdoing patterns. The timber in the cupboards is beautiful and I feel that bench top would detract from it. I would have as plain as possible top in a cream/beige to enhance the timber. This would give you plenty of choice of other colours in the room. I don't feel I can really comment on colours as I can't tell the aspect of your room or the lighting nor do I know what other colours you have through the house.

The only downside to the cupboard doors you are considering is that they will attract dust and being in the kitchen a greasy dust.

First are these the cabinets you both want? If so then gut the thing and redo it properly because not with that floor.

I would refinish all the cabinets in white, but if you keep them the same replace the counter with a beautiful dark granite and pick a dark grey tile floor with large tiles. Replace the sink with an oversized undermount blanco or stainless steel sink with one sink, not two. I wish I had picked a single large sink. My neighbor has one and she can fit a large cookie sheet all the way in the sink.

Love those new cabinets idea ,if you could change that floor it would bring everything up to date , painting the kitchen in a blue will bring life in as well ,at the moment everything is dated and needs a fresh touch . The counter top look good too.
