In order to do contemporary "right", you need to add some soft textures, like maybe a shaggy rug or flokati, and things like books -- anything to get rid of the flat and slick. It looks as though you have some kind of drapery, so that is good because at night windows that aren't covered look like big black holes, unless they are lighted from the outside and have something out there that is pretty. I also like to incorporate something shiny in every room, like a big silver bowl, mirror, chrome legged chair (with hairy hide) or candle holders. Lighting is one of the most important parts of design, and though I see the two lamps behind the one sofa, maybe another lamp or two beside the other section of the sofa. The cans should be used to give you some light in the room, but not for reading or ambiance. If you notice how you look under can lighting, you will have shadows under your eyes etc., while with ambiant lighting or task lighting,you will look so much better. You have the right idea with the color of the shades. Maybe over the bar, you should change out the black shades to a warmer color, or amber glass to go with the rest of your things. A pretty soft throw on the sofa would help too. Warm colors are amber, red, orange, tan, etc., so you have a good start.
