Looking to replace worn out (really stinky and nasty) carpet in my father in laws home. My father in law is 75 years old- has numerous eye problems and is almost blind. He lives up north on the lake- the house is basically a older cabin- so dirt, sand, and pine needles are tracked indoors on a constant basis. He almost never vacuums....he simply can't see the dirt...and there is no one available to come clean his house for him on a regular basis. We live 4 1/2 hours away....so we can't get up there very often. We are not sure at this stage how much longer he will actually be able to live there on his own...maybe another 1-3 years? We may take over the house at some point and use it as a cabin again in the future once he moves to a retirement home...or assisted living.

I am wondering what color carpet to replace with? I was thinking something dark and rather inexpensive such as a commercial grade carpet with very little pile. My FIL frequently spills things...due to his eye issues so I am thinking of possible coffee/food stains on a lighter colored carpet. He would never rent a carpet cleaner and would not pay anyone to come do it for him. If he were to drop any pills (they are mostly white) or something else really small like a hearing aid battery he could pick those out better against a darker carpet. My sister in law (his daughter) thinks a lighter colored carpet (off white or beige burber) would work good as he needs high contrast.

Most walls are currently off white with white trim throughout. Current carpet is light beige burber with darker grayed-dirty looking spots in high traffic areas. Sorry for no photo's- I have not been up there for over 2 years because the stink is soooo bad!

Any thoughts on colors of carpet for someone with restricted vision?
