Help! Tropic brown granite and....?

We are planning on replacing our backsplash. We have tropic brown granite countertops, 'honey' maple cabs...think builder basic. Hubby wants to go slate but I think it's too busy. I'm thinking seaglass subway...but too jarring? Trying to work with what we have but make it more contemporary... Ideas please!

Slate can be very busy since no piece is the same color. However, it can look good. I am posting several photos of a kitchen that we designed with a slate backsplash. The counters and cabinets are all a lighter shade then yours.

You might want to get about 10 to 15 pieces of each material that you are considering and use a temporary glue to place them on the wall..........see which material that you like the best.
