Depends on the amount and type of usage. A "good finish" will help prevent scratching but not dents from things dropped, etc. Bottom line Fir is oneof the softest flooring woods --oak is 2x as hard.

Many people love their fir floors...because they look aged, worn, dented, dimpled and full of character. There are some personalities who CANNOT HANDLE a floor that is dinged up inside of a year or two. To add "character" to a fir floor it only takes a year or two. To add character to an oak/maple floor can take a decade or so.

A "good finish" is a professionally applied finish with professional grade (not varathane, not minwax, etc) finish. Scratches will occur whether you install oak, maple, hickory or fir. The dents and gouges will happen much faster and with greater frequency with fir. Again, if you LIKE the beaten up rustic look...then fir will suite you perfectly.

If you, or anyone in your home is a PERFECTIONIST, a fir floor can be a recipe for design/financial dilemnas down the road. It all comes down to personality. The fir floor will last for decades (3/4" solid = 60 - 80 years). The "perfect" looking finish (without any dents) will change very quickly. Can you/your parner handle that? That is the answer to whether or not fir is right for your home.

Vertical grain oak called Rift Sawn is also available and will be about twice as hard. Something to consider...
