How much space do you have beyond the patio? It looks like you could use more patio space for your dining area as well as covered space for kids to play. What part of the country are you in? Planting a tree will also help to get shade in the future so do that now.

Well I would only want to go out about 6 more ft because we have a wall that about 15 ft from patio. It's a retaining wall. Also we have the pool there so I didn't want a tree super close to the pool for leaf reasons.

We're just in the process of putting up a pergola with a glass roof. It will give some shade but also ensure there is still enough light coming into the house. We're in the UK though so need all the light and warmth we can get!

That's really cool. Where did u find one of those? Are u spending a lot in a glass top pergola? Sounds pricy!

I never heard of. Sunsail? Is the a carpet on your flooring also?

We painted the patio in a dark brown and yes, that is an outdoor carpet. The sunsail keeps the rain out (except for really heavy rain that blows in from the side). Our sail is from Frontgate but after we bought ours I found them on overstock for much less! If you google sunsail you'll see other pics - much better than the ones I posted.

If you just google glass canopy there are lots of manufacturers. We already had a solid pergola attached to the house and so we are simply adding safety glass on top from a local glazier.

I think it needs a retractable awning...you won't believe how cool they are...I have had one for 10 years and have no problems with it....they do the job efficiently!

It actually opens and closes like blinds, you can have multiple zones depending on the size of your space that can open independently I have two zones for my space. Here are a few more pictures, I also put small lights around the frame which makes it look nice at night.
