I guess it's more the decor. The layout seems fine. I think it's those arched cabinets that are really throwing me. Fortunately, that is paint on the walls not wallpaper.

For me it's really just the paint on the walls. Makes it looks too formal for a kitchen. Once you paint it I'm sure you won't notice the arched cabinets as much. They aren't offensive.

It's a lovely large kitchen, just over decorated. I also think wall paint will make a big difference. Too many things competing right now, between the ceiling, walls, arched cabinets. Let the focus be the architectural details.

Seems to me the light box on the ceiling is an issue. If it were my kitchen, I'd eliminate that and update the lighting with some beautiful pendants. Totally agree that changing the paint will help tremendously as well.

I also agree about paint but also consider removing the arched cabinets and adding open shelving which I think will modernize your kitchen .

I wonder if you could some how make the island all one level - that may also help modernise it.

The center lighting thing is heavy and, the lighting in general is inadequate for that size kitchen. I agree with the posts on paint color and perhaps switching out the arched cabinets for open shelving. The island seems rather awkward as well.

paint for sure and what about adding 2 pendant lights in place of the can lights over the island. your personal lighting selection will add YOU to the room.

Lots of ideas: As above, would paint, remove (if possible) the light box on ceiling and add pendant lighting. You could also change hardward on cupboards to something more modern, add a roman blind on the window, change the bar seats (if being left behind), in alcove behind stove add a stainless steel panel or subway tiles, could paint island a dark grey or black, remove cork board and paint that wall with chalk board paint, replace the arched cupboards with shelving, and add a great runner on the floor. Changing the wallpaper will change the entire feel of the kitchen. Have fun in your new home!

I would start with paint and then address the cabinets. That being said, I agree open shelving may in the end be the best. Also the idea of making the island all one level will make it look like a brand new kitchen!

its a lovely, bright kitchen with a ton of potential. If I were making a few tweaks, I would remove the wallpaper and add a nice backsplash. I'm also not entirely sold on the rounded cabinets on the far wall - it's not terrible it's just unconventional. With a few minor adjustments this kitchen will look magazine ready! Hope you enjoy it for years to come :)
