Help with Family Room Layout and Design

Hello
We recently moved into a new house and we are struggling to figure out our family room layout and design. This is going to be the primary hang out space for our young family but I would like it to look nice enough so it can be used to host company as well. The room is roughly 17' x 21'. It has a large opening to the kitchen/hall and as you can see there is a door to the outside that splits the room.

We would like to utilize the large green sectional. The chevron rug will be replaced so please ignore. I am primarily looking for layout help but would also love ideas on how to bring together the yellow walls and green couch. Lastly, as you can see, we have little kids so I was thinking about a built-ins for storage and to house the TV.

Given the updated pictures you posted, I would recommend putting the TV on the wall shared with the kitchen and arranging the furniture in a L-shape facing that wall (opening towards both the TV and the kitchen to be more open and welcoming). The other option would be to keep the TV on the wall that is on in the above pictures (building the shelving flush with the wall) and arranging the furniture around the rest of the room. I would definitely recommend utilizing built ins / entertainment center for the TV. You have a great space with the windows and natural lighting that would look great with the right wood/color shelves. As far as tying in the yellow walls and green couch, because the green and yellow are both very light and the room has so much natural light, I would suggest using a darker accent color to tie everything together. I would suggest a darker red or brown tone depending on your personal preference, either/both the red chair and dark coffee table would be good starting points. How you arrange the furniture should really depend on what you want the focal point of the room to be. Do you want everything to be focused on the TV, or do you want it to be arranged to be open and inviting? It would also help to see the wall opening into the kitchen.

Built-ins are essential, particularly with some doors to control clutter. Current TV location seems difficult. Can you fill pocket in wall and do a grouping facing that wall? That seems the better wall for a large flatscreen TV.

Find a fabric you like that has both the yellow and the green in it, and use it for pillows and/or curtains.

What is the sectional facing at present?
How about painting the walls? Perhaps a warm, gentle brown.
You can build semi-dark builtins.
The armchair at the door seems oddly placed.
A light can be a great focal point for the rppm.

Thanks for all the great feedback. Its really helpful. To answer some of the questions:
-We were in the the process of rearranging when I took this. The TV is now placed in front of the couch. I will add a photo tonight
-ACT Builder - I would like the focus to not be the TV. I'd like the room to be open and inviting and just have the TV be a part of that. Thats my concern with the layout now. Again I will upload picture tonight. I will also post one of the opening to the kitchen
-najeebah1 - I should have mentioned that - we would like to keep the yellow walls. we could change them but I'd like to work with them if possible.
