I don't think you guys need a lot of razzle-dazzle. I'm ging to suggest a low fece or hedges at the front obscuring Basement/lower level. I'd say lose the little railing. and do a nice raised planting area of something to the right. Install shutters at door, and two windows...white? Hope you get some more suggestions, cheers! PS this is what one family did to harmonize there house with the environment.

Think this is more along the guidelines of landscaping, if anything!

Hi, jkbaxter - I think a relatively inexpensive enhancement would be to paint the base a deep clay that mimics the brick. The garage and front door could be painted as well. I think a moss green would look nice.

Also inexpensive but requires muscle, is renting a jack hammer and removing the concrete ramp to the left of the stairs. Various evergreen plantings with a few perennials could go in it's place.

A little more expensive enhancement is to add a fence as mentioned by Jamieson. If you're handy you can cut the cost signficantly by erecting it yourself. It's not difficult but does require two people and some strength.

For the piece de resistance - add a portico to draw attention to the entrance with a small porch. This is something best left to a skilled tradesman.

I really like the subtle curve of the stairs and the mature evergreens. The one in the foreground would benefit from a haircut. Below is a mock up of how I can see this home looking down the road.

Thank you Jamieson and Manon Floreat- I love both your ideas! I think a fence would work well as well as some landscaping. I also like the idea of the portico and painting the stucco a darker color. On the fence, do you think a smaller fence- just between the two raised areas would work? We would also have to install a gate as our kids use this door quite a bit. Unfortunately we have to keep the railing since we have older parents that visit frequently. I would love to get rid of the ramp, but will have to talk hubby into it! If the ramp is suitable for wheelchair access, keep it. You never know when it will come in handy.

Look into acid staining for the concrete. A coordinating color to the house would make the ramp and steps less noticeable

Do you use the driveway to the former apartment? If not put a fence and or hedge across the front and make it an enclosed courtyard with outdoor furniture.
