Squirrels eating house!

Does anyone know how to stop squirrels from doing this to your house? We are constantly repairing these sections and now we are at the point where we need to replace the wood because they have chewed so much.

Sorry...but i'm finding this funny because my co-worker had a similar but unrelated problem. His problem was woodpeckers pecking side of house. Jokingly, i answered, remove the bugs and the woodpeckers will go away.....but seriously, in hidesight maybe some trutch in that simple saying

I feel your pain! I had the same problem when we first bought our house. It was January when we moved in and the squirrels had nested in our trees, used our fence as their playground, our potted plants for digging practice, and our house as food. They even hissed at my dogs from high up on the trunks of trees. The previous owners had installed wire mesh under the eaves of the detached garage to keep them out. It was so bad my husband bought me a slingshot, though I never had the heart to use it. I did try various mixtures of cayenne pepper sprays but they wash off when it rains. Interestingly, the squirrels have now mostly moved on to someplace else in the neighborhood. My best guess is that we removed their source of nesting material by picking up all the leaves last fall, which the previous owners had not done. Our next door neighbors had a play set installed in their yard last year in the area near our fence, so they got all their leaves up, too. If you find a solution let us know!

We had woodpeckers too Curt, and you are correct that they are eating bugs in the wood.

Thanks guys - yeah, we had woodpeckers, too. Put up sparkle strips - like tinsel near the spots they are pecking. It works! I bought a more attractive kind at a bird store and it truly sends them away. Also, put up other food sources, too.

Maybe I'll try putting some strong hot sauce IN the paint next time! ;)

We have squirrels running around our yard all day, but it's never been a problem as they stay out at the tree where the bird feeder is. A lot of seeds have fallen to the ground so they eat that. They live in the big oak next door.
