Kitchen Niche

We just finished up a kitchen remodel, and we have this small space between the tall cabinets and the wing wall that we need to decide how to handle. The original idea was just to put 2-3 2" white painted shelves (and keep the dog bowls underneath), but I'm just thinking there might be a better, more interesting way to do it...without spending a ton of money on custom millwork. The porch you can see is all cedar, and very integrated with the kitchen, visually and functionally. Niche is 12" deep and 36" wide. Thanks!

We love the low shelf with the dog bowl(s) idea. Keep the shelf white and make sure the bowl doesn't stick way out from the wall, hopefully it fits within the depth of the niche.
THEN put a fantastic wallpainting, interesting piece of wall paper, a mosaic of tile all the way up that reflects or contrasts to your counter top and or perhaps a piece of art.
It is a small space. Keep it as a happy accent but keep it free from clutter.

Kitchen looks great! I was just wondering why you didn't extend the wall of cabinets to include this niche? To me that would have looked best and provided more storage...

Thanks! We just liked the idea of being able to tuck the dog bowls away, and doing something with a little more interest in that space.

In that case I wouldn't add open shelves - I would break it up with a really interesting piece of tall artwork and dog bowls on the floor.

When we redid our kitchen, we had a wall of upper glass cabinets and lower drawers, but left the bottom middle open for our dog's bowls! It was so nice not to be tripping over the water bowl and it was a great decision for us. For your wall, I would use reclaimed wood and you could incorpoarte blackboard paint behind (so shelves would be on upper 1/3), shelves could go quite low and in 1/3 section add a dog tray, or stop shelves half way and add a fun Eat sign with wall painted a fun color.
