Help me finish this entryway please!

I love the antique chest and the artwork, so I’d like to keep both. The dining room is immediately adjacent to this space, and I feel like the colors in the artwork complement the dining room really well.

The area just doesn’t feel quite finished to me yet. I’m considering having the artwork framed and possibly layering a mirror behind it (although no idea what size or type), but I’m open to other ideas for finishing the vignette — lighting, accessories, framing, mirror, etc. Also, realized the artwork isn’t quite centered over the chest so that needs to be corrected, however the painting may then need to be lowered because of the staircase. 😫

I’m going for a collected, traditional-but-updated look rather than anything too modern or trendy. What would you do to make this feel complete?

Frankly, if given a choice between adding something and taking something away, I'd vote for the latter. I think it's great the way it is, but if it were my house, I'd remove the books and plants.

It feels like there's too much in such a small area. The scale is not quite right; can the chest go elsewhere? May be a small bench instead?

It’s very nice as is. No to a mirror or new frame— you don’t have space. Stop obsessing and enjoy!

Agree with not adding more since it’s already a tight fit. Definitely no mirror and there’s not room for a frame. You might get away with a very narrow frame but would likely have to lean the art against the wall vs hang. I like the two plants but would remove the other items. There’s a lot of pattern in a small space so I’d prefer keeping it simple.

    Remove the credenza/ chest

The grains do not complement the entryway. Build of the flooring and a staircase as the backdrop for one dynamic piece.

Both the art and the chest are lovely, but the vignette as a whole doesn’t give either of them credit. Is there another place near the dining room (or in dining room) where the art will be more appreciated and you could enhance further by framing and even adding a light.

Below is an example of good proportions/balance and the chest will pop. Testing different items is the best way to find the right combination

“I'd add a table lamp and move the little things away from the back wall.”

    Nice!

The chest is interesting and looks good in that space. The right mirror, with a thin frame, could go over it as @Maureen showed. The painting is too large for that area and should be placed where it isn’t squished onto a wall.

I always like a small interesting lamp on an entryway piece, which also lights the stairs at night.

Maybe use dark accessories to relate to the floors and stairs and to leave the distinctive chest the lighter focal point of the vignette?

As others have said, perhaps the art can find a home in the dining room?

Less is more,  Perhaps a bowl on the middle too for keys. Use an accent lamp as the art. Make it blue if you dont want it gold.

Seems to me that the chest and artwork seem to be jamb packed into this small space. Might suggest a table with an open bottom instead of the chest to give this spot a more open and airy feel.

I feel like the chest is very heavy for this spot. But if you are not keen on moving it, then I would not keep the art there. I am sure it can be placed in a more suitable spot. I would replace it with a mirror to give depth to the space. Because you don't have much space due to the stairs, move the mirror over to the right side and balance it with a plant on th left side.
