Prep Kitchen/Butler's Pantry

The only existing kitchen in our 1938 Colonial Revival was an add-on dating from the late 1940's. We did a kitchen build in an adjacent room, and turned this old kitchen into a Prep kitchen/Butler's Pantry. Repainted the existing cabinets, installed new countertops, removed the fridge and put in refrigerator drawers. Built a wall, added a door and installed real stained-glass windows we had brought with us from our old house in Northern Virginia.

Thank you. We would have replaced the floors, but underneath them lies the dreaded asbestos linoleum. I didn't hate them enough to tackle that! Obviously the sink, faucet cabinet hardware and subway tiles on the wall are new as well. Here is a pic of the kitchen before reno, as well as the dining nook and 1938 light fixture. The last photo shows a glimpse of the new kitchen. (We could not remove the wall as it is load-bearing)

So in essence you have two kitchens, sort of? It's cute.

Though load bearing walls can be removed if replaced with beams And asbestos linoleum can be removed safely if you wear proper safety gear. I did both to extend my kitchen into an add-on.

Yes, I have two kitchens--now wondering how we lived with out them, LOL! It has actually made my master bedroom area into a fully functioning 1100 square ft apartment if I ever want it to be. 1 Bedroom, 3 baths, den with woodburning FP, kitchen and dining nook, with a separate entrance). You are absolutely correct on both counts...but the cost would have been prohibitive for what we would have gained. The kitchen build in the adjacent room turned out to be plenty big enough without removing a wall (photos are posted in one of my ideabooks if you're interested). The sausilito tile I just didn't hate enough to tear up. :-)
