I like the idea of a mirror backsplash or maybe stainless penny rounds or tile or mother of pearl mosaic to give it a little sparkle.

I think you should use a brick style backsplash so it doesn't look kitchen-y.

Would it bother anyone if I used another tile/tile pattern on the bar when you can see the white subway tile backsplash in the kitchen when you are looking at the bar?

Someone beat me to it!...but my vote is definitely for the stainless steel brick tiles!

I don't think it would matter that they are different tiles, this isn't really part of the kitchen. I like the mirror, my only concern would be spots or streaks. I have a heck of a time getting my mirrors streak free.

I wouldn't worry about tying into the backsplash in the kitchen -- instead I'd pick a mosaic that gives this spot a little grown-up flash, preferably echoing or drawing on colors used elsewhere in the same room. what color are your rugs, couches, etc.? Is there brick or stone elsewhere in the room? You might just catch some element from elsewhere, but otherwise I'd really play it up here -- this wall could end up pretty plain with the white and glass, and a backsplash is a chance to have fun (especially with a small amount that doesn't have to be liveable in the same way as a 20 feet of kitchen backsplash). It's your art for this wall!

I really like the mirror back splash idea. What do you think about do a built-in buffet look by adding corbels and trimming out the mirror.

Thanks everyone! The stone is actually an interesting idea because I have a huge stone fireplace in the living room. I also like the idea of corbels and trimming out the mirror _ it certainly looks more finished than mine. The rest of the space is pretty colorless at this point because I am redoing the living room and the dining room too, so all I have is the gray on the walls, white cabinets, dark floors and a huge riverrock stone fireplace. The house used to look like an A frame ski lodge until I painted all the wood white. Now that I have everything neutral I am scared to make the wrong move with color!
