It's hard to know how this room lays out without more photos. First off, putting the TV above the fireplace is a great fix. Remove the mantle completely. It's not doing anything attractive and you aren't going to sit stuff in front of the TV anyway. What you can do is put a "mirror" front to the TV that is often used to disguise it. When the TV is one, the mirror disappears. Great fix for something that is "equipment" and not art. Get an electrician and your cable guy to fix the outlets and wiring so that it's hidden. Nothing would look tackier than wires running everywhere. (Would someone please invent a cordless TV? I mean, how hard is that?)

Then you can get rid of the "media center" furniture which has no other purpose and replace it with a great chest/high-gloss painted cabinet/something interesting. I'd get a bigger rug or turn that one the other way. You may just have to get a bigger rug.

The valance is very out of place and are those vertical blinds? Hard to tell. Hang a rod (closet pole can be bought up to 12 ft lengths and all you need is brackets; spray paint to taste) over the slider and get some curtain that are full enough, grometted (sp?) or on rings, so they open and close easily. Forget valances.

Personally, I"d start with a paint job. A really great accent feature would be to paint the slanted ceiling and the fireplace wall the color you like, and the rest of the room the cream (or whatever color you want). That would flow. The sidewall painted aqua breaks up the flow, and leaves that slanted ceiling hanging out there like an after thought.

I agree that the TV would be too high for comfortable viewing over the fireplace. I would suggest a large media unit/storage for the teal wall. It would fill in some of the large wall space and even though you don't use the TV in the room that much, you could use the unit for storing things or displaying decorative items. You would do well to hire some local help for an overall plan so you don't feel like it's pieced together.

As mentioned by pcsweeney1, the spot above the fireplace is too high. A long low console on the teal wall with the TV atop it would be more comfortable for viewing. Since you don't watch it much you may want to consider a cupboard along that wall so it's completely out of sight.

If you go for the console, think about moving the TV a bit to the right towards the sliding doors and balancing the other side with s vertical element such as a plant or painting.

Inkwitch - thanks for your suggestions. We cannot paint the ceiling because it is a popcorn ceiling and when it gets wet it comes down. We struggled with removing the popcorn on most of our ceilings and have to leave this one alone.
Thanks for your mirror suggestion with the fireplace, maybe even a picture with a frame could hide the tv.
We are going to get rid of the window treatments and replace them.

HI - Ignore the fact that the teal wall is vaulted and have a bookcase TV wall arrangement either builtins or applyed furniture wall unites - not higher than the 8 foot level .IKEA has some great ones .

I personally like inkwitch's idea of removing the mantle and putting the TV there. Streamlines the TV - however - the teal wall with its vertical slope - I'd try to put shelves along that wall that are the height of the sliding door - so you get a consistent horizontal line - probably dark shelves. And if you do that - well that would be a perfect place for a TV:) - options abound! Good luck.

I agree with Graystone Design + Build. The viewing height is too high for above the fireplace. I think a large unit for the TV and other storage ideas is best. Also, be very careful with a "mirror" to cover the TV in any room besides maybe a bedroom or basement. The light in the room will diminish the clarity and brightness of the picture. I do agree with some drapery to warm up the space. I think you just need to fill it with larger pieces. I believe that too many small things added dates a space. Some great ideas for you already, here is something else to consider. Since you do not watch tv often I suggest hiding the tv unless you want to see it. I like the Shutter Media Cabinet from Restoration Hardware. Place it on the teal wall (which I think you should paint so that it does not draw attention to the vaulted ceiling) I would also take down the window treatments you have now and mount a rod at the same height the cabinet is at, find a wonderful print you love and also take down the mantle and the mirror over the fireplace. Place a great piece of art over it instead. That is the focal point of the room not the teal wall.

Just make sure that the window panels and the art compliment each other and not fight as they are so close together. You could add a chair on each side of the cabinet as well to help with that wall.

I see potential for a beautiful room! Rather than focusing on the slanted wall, I'd paint the wall behind the fireplace the same teal you have on the other wall. This will help to make your space flow more nicely. The mirror must go, regardless of whether you put the TV there or not. Look at what it's reflecting - air vents and doorways. And definitely lower the mantle. I agree with the others - remove the valance and blinds and put a nice pair of panels up. I think any type of media storage system (as long as it hides all cords) would work well in your space. Have fun!

I like inkwitch's idea of removing the mantle and putting the TV there too. I also would remove the benchs from in front of the window. You have a lot to look at the seating level. Add some colorful throw pillows on the floor by the window and matching ones on the sofa. .

If this is not the primary tv watching space consider taking the tv out. Create a real sitting room. New rod and drapes will do wonders. Check out discountdrapery.com
I like the slanted wall painted a pop color. Now with no tv, this is a beautiful gallery wall for beautifully famed family photos.

If you have another option - don't put your TV over the fireplace. In this case you DO have an option. Especially as you say you don't watch it that much and putting it there is making it a focal point. Fix up your fireplace and make that the focal point.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Now I am thinking about putting the tv over the fireplace and get rid of the ledge. I am going to cover the tv with a picture from television-art.com. Although there is not much to choose from with a 55" tv.

I have to agree. Also, I think you need a large long piece on the teal wall to balance this large room. I have a tv above a fireplace in one room and also chose not to do that in another room. Each room warrants the decision and I'm happy with both. Try not to go with the "new" idea just because it's the new thing if it doesn't make sense with how you live. It's still subjective and it's your house, so you should do what you would like to do!!
