It doesn't touch another price of cabinetry. I think a taller refrigerator was there previously.

I don't know what the style is for the rest of the kitchen but how about 2 rectangular baskets to fill up that space and hide some junk. ;) Or if you can't find the right size, maybe painted wooden boxes. I've seen cute ones that have a little placket on the front in chalkboard paint or a decorative handle.

Can you use the space to stack pesky things, like cutting boards or muffin tins? We have a big fancy serving bowl full of take-out menus in our space like this, although it's not nearly so high. Or maybe you could get two wicker storage baskets that would fill the width and most of the height, and use them for just about anything -- towels, pantry items, off-season outerwear . . .

If you can match the wood, add a shel just above the refrigerator, and as Martha suggested, paint the wall behind the frig. You can then place decorative items or stack cookbooks to fill in the space. Keep it simple and uncluttered since it is a focal area above the refrigerator.

I would paint the wine rack.

the wood looks like it hasn't been stained? I would remove the whole thing honestly it is pretty unusable space , i think wine would get too hot up there any way. then just paint that wall and be done with it. Or at least cut off the top and just cap it off so it looks like its part of the cabinets still.

The lattice section looks like it may have been used as a wine rack. If wine bottles fit, I'd put a few in there and then use the empty space for a row of cookbooks and books on wines and liquors.

Pretty strange to see a wine rack above the fridge because wine should definitely not be stored up there. Maybe remove the whole thing and have a new cabinet made to properly fill the space.

@Martha, I think a shelf with either a basket or some cook books too. You could also have someone cut it to fit. It could be cut from the bottom. I noticed your other cabinets don't go to the ceiling anyway. Just a thought. Your kitchen is nice. I love all The light from the widows and doors. Nice. Good luck, hope it all works out. : ) Cutting it is an easy fix.

Even put empty wine bottles up there and then love the suggestion to put cook books on the bottom with a little more touches of the wine. Larger wine glasses as long as the cookbooks would not fall and knock them down. A wine bottle chiller/container could also work.

Thanks abbyjean...the OP asked what to put in this space and it looks like that's what the previous owner built it for -- wine. I figured wine and cookbooks would at least be decorative! Most of us store stuff above the frig that we rarely use because we can't reach it!
