Tudor - Exterior update

Looking for paint the exterior of my Tudor home. Would love to incorporate black or
Modern elements somehow. Roof colour would remain same. TIA!

I like your idea to incorporate black. I would not go “modern,” per se, with this house; so my approach may or may not be what you are looking for.

    Would this work?

    Yes. That looks good.

Consider changing garage door color also to soften the look.

Tudor is such a historically distinct style am not sure that mixing in modern elements would work. The black half-timbering isn't bad. It certainly provides more contrast and let's the half-timbering stand out. I do like the change in door color. The blue just doesn't seem overly appropriate. On the other hand with the blue door there is no mistaking where the front door is.

I cannot imagine modern anything with a Tudor style but I think your post with the black added is a good choice .I agree the garage door needs to be black also

Here is a version with a darker green

Sorry I can’t seem to get it to upload

Personal preference, I think something a little less harsh than ”black”, maybe SW Black Fox or SW Urbane Bronze for the trim & timbers & garage, but doing the front door in a color would be nice. No to adding ”modern” elements.

Side note, difficult to tell from your picture, it looks like your landscaping could be refreshed.

I too find the black harsh against the white on the upper level, to me it also makes the overall look quite choppy.

The charcoal "foxy" color looks good and blends nicely with the roof.
I would consider using that same color on the garage door and the front door.
Would a dark railing on the right side of the stairs add to safety considerations?
Would stained glass in the door window enhance the olde english/renaissance vibe?
    Do show us your updates.

I love the dark trim. I would also like to see the front door striped of paint to show off the original natural wood. Stain the
door in a medium wood tone and do the same stain color on the garage door.

@simplynatural ... like that, so much better, more cohesive.

  • yesterday

True, that is more cohesive. I’m not a huge brown fan. Hmmm.

    Simplynatural…more neutral like this?

I like that Alicia, gets away from the brown siding, but still looks cohesive.

One more… I was really hoping for a black door. What about this one as a compromise. Neighbours house has black in it

Not a pro, but I like that one with the black door too.

Thanks Doods. That one would be more budget friendly as well. Have a great weekend! Thank you!

I think the black door looks good. I like the charcoal paint on the tudor. I wouldnt try to go modern with your house. I would repaint the garage door. The stain just doesnt look right, nor go with any of what you are wanting.

I had a brick house and put on an addition. I matched the mortar color for the siding and trim to pull it together. That will give you some contrast without being too light or dark.

When I evaluate proposed changes to houses, I ask myself a few questions.

The first is, "Where do my eyes go?" If the answer is anywhere other than the entrance, then it's not the right design yet. In this case, when the upper story is too light, my eyes go immediately there. When the upper story is darker than the stairs, my eyes are pulled down to the lighter entry area.

A second question is, "Does this hold together? Is there unity? Do I see an attractive whole or do I see disjointed parts?" For me, too much small-area contrast creates choppiness rather than unity.

A third question is, "Does it just seem right?" If I feel uneasy about anything I see, even if I can't quite put my finger on why, it's not right yet.

And finally, I ask myself, "Would I want to live there? Would I buy this in a heartbeat?" I want those answers to be yes. I want to fall in love with what I see and wish it were my own.

(Notice that none of these questions are, "Is this the latest fashion? What will others think of my choices?")

Your call which, if any, of the options shown above return the right answers for you.

Black is not a new color for Tudors...

There is much info out there about Tudor houses. Just one article I found on a quick search:

    https://warlinepainting.ca/tudor-rules-how-to-paint-your-tudor-revival-home/

It’s really a matter of personal preference. But there is also the fact that black is really not a new color for Tudors.
