You could use a side table with lamp, set of shelves for the walls, artwork and perhaps a chest of drawers. Have you decided on a room color?

Hi Mai Na, Here are a couple suggestions for your room;
1. Get a patterned bedding set in a graphic theme, probably in the line of colors in grey or blues.
2. Side tables with lamps.
3. An art work for the wall above the bed, maybe in something that your boy likes...like cars or planes..
4. depends on the bedding you get, you can match it to the curtains for the room.

For decorations, I would suggest going to your local antique/consignment store and scouting out some interesting things like model sailboats or airplanes or a particularly fascinating lamp. Also, get some bookshelves. I have about 300 books in my bedroom which I've collected and read over my 17 years, and, from what it seems, your son is rather young, judging from the step-stool, so giving him even a small bookshelf to start a decent library is a good idea. For decor on the wall at the head of the bed, you could put a poster, wall-hanging, set of photographs, framed drawings, maps, or even flags. Make certain that you have some waist or shoulder-height horizontal surface for your son to place his own creations and curios, whether they be Lego models or sports trophies. And of course, talk over things with your son. Bring him to the store to pick out his own colour of paint or to the antique store to find something he'll love. Get him excited to decorate, and he may even give you some great ideas!

Oh yes, and side-tables!

What does your son (or the boy) want/like? Certainly, he must have some opinions. It's a fun project to work on together!

If he's a Star Wars fan, you can buy some great prints from Allposters.com already framed. They also have great stencils and wall graphics.

You can paint the wall in two colors(top and bottom) and add an inexpensive moulding strip over the middle. Lots of IMPACT, little price!

If your boy likes Star Wars there are many different accessories you can get for a themed room. There are also themes like cars, boats, airplanes, robots etc. for which you can get bedding, curtains, artwork and (removable) decals to match!

My son is 6 years old. He loves cars, Star Wars, trains, all of the super heros! I want his bedroom to be one that he can grow into for years to come. I'm trying to stay away from making it too "childish." I love the idea of maybe using things he's interested in now for decorating a book shelf, but I would much prefer to keep that at a minimum. My son goes through stages with his toys and things he's interested in. I don't want to be switching out bed sheets, wall colors, pictures or decorations when he's 12, 16, etc....

A rug is also a great place to start building your design!
Using it's colors and patterns throughout the room, creates a very cohesive style.
A bold, colorful rug, such as these, would be very fun and they are also very child-friendly.
