Since the lights are needed for various tasks in the kitchen, placing them directly over where those tasks take place is advisable. When you have cabinets against the wall, installing them 18" out from the wall allows the light to fall on the work surface.

Too often I see recessed lights placed in the space where you stand to work. That's not a good idea because if the light is behind you, your body will create a shadow over the work area.

If you have an island or peninsula, again you should place the lights to shine down on that area. You'll also need a light in front of the ovens.

Get your electrition in first if it is a remodel. You may have limitations that u need to work with so knowing what they are will assist in your decision making. I got recessed lighting put into my century home kitchen and my electrician was wonderful - honestly this lighting was the best upgrade I have ever done - changed my life!
