If you taped them off carefully you could paint just the front 4" of each cubbie's interior.

A splash of colour

I agree with those that don't want the walls tiled. The white color of the base cabinet on the sink side is too stark. Can you paint it? Can you build a 42" high wall on that base end using barn wood? The sink side of the laundry room just doesn't see to blend with the rest of the space.

Target has some great brown plastic baskets that look like rattan and would be the perfect size. A big piece of art in a color that compliments your stone wall - greyish blue (BM Restful), green (BM Ryegrass), grey or neutrals and paint the walls in a complimentary color. After that, the only way it would look better is with a hired laundress in it :) Lucky you - it's a great space.

That wall is fab. Barn wood behind the sink would look great.

Carolyn to answer your question, yes, I am deliberately leaning toward neutral colours. I think it's partly a stage of life. 4 kids, hectic schedules.... It's nice to come come to "calm" even if it's only in the paint! My kitchen is where we spend most of our time and it is all cream with some black soapstone on counters. I have one painting which is a pop of colour and I love that! I love red, a bit of black, yellow and bright green. Only in small doses though and I like the colour to be in the things I can change. This is our forever house. It is 140 years old so we always try to incorporate so etching old in each room in antiques or lighting. We recently built an addition on the house, which is what I'm now trying to decorate with HOUZZ . I don't want it to scream "new" against the old house. I'll attach a pic of kitchen to show painting which I love as well as tag giving the idea of what the rest of the house looks like. Hope that's helpful

Combine, just to see how you feel about adding some color to the laundry room, why not take that picture off the wall from the kitchen and put it in the laundry room for a couple of hours. If you like adding the color, then you can acquire a new picture for the laundry and move your favorite back to the kitchen.

I find it interesting that you have the rainbow of brightly colored pictures on your home page, but this completely beige neutral snooze in the laundry room.

I would look for colorful framed posters and area rugs that you can easily switch out when the mood strikes. Also, can the stone wall be sealed with a gloss polyuretane? To protect the mortar from moisture and enhance the colors of the natural stone?

Art over the sink is going to do a world of difference. A contrasting back splash and a few pops of color in the accessories in the open shelves. Adding a small plant or topiary next to the sink will add some life to the space also.

my green photos could be for items on the white wall, but I'm thinking the green [if you like green and you said not so much color in this room] shouldn't be too modern or saturated unless you want eclectic ? but a somewhat muted, yet cheerful green.... :)

To answer your question about the stone, it is actually an outside wall that has been exposed to moisture for a 140 years until a couple of moths ago. The mortar is in really good shape so far. I hadn't thought about sealing it and appreciate that suggestion, but we like it for now the way it is.

My laundry room has a Hawaiian flair. I have hula skirts to cover the "stuff" on my shelves, the walls are blue and I have Hawaiian print little curtain. Make it a place that you love. My neighbor did her's all in hot pink. It's fun! Change out the hardware on the doors.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I don't really want to paint as I just built it and painted it a month ago. This room is open to much of the house and does not have a door so I don't want it to stand out too much. I will add some art and some colour on shelves. Im on the hunt for nicer baskets as well.

I love this room...the idea of it and the execution! I would consider a stainless steel tile backsplash above the washer and dryer or maybe a mother of pearl or glass small sqare mosaic to add a little sparkle. I think art above the sink is a good idea, and possibly painting just that wall in an accent color.

Sell it on craigslist and hang separate framed photos instead. Or take off the mat and use it to frame one large picture.

A mirror company may be able to put a mirror in the frame. Have them put hooks on it so that it can be hung either horizontally or vertically.

Yes. I have mirrors done up many times. Is the size okay? Should I stain the frame darker? Blackish? Maybe red? I have no idea. You had suggested art here and that's a good idea, I just haven't found any yet and I think it looks odd being so blank.

My first thought was a quilt or other fabric hanging on the stone wall (probably from the ceiling) and a smaller something over the sink. But not too big, since the stone has such gorgeous character.

I can't tell from your photos what the finish is on the frame. Please remind me of what you have planned for lighting.

I like idea of using that frame for one print [or lots if you were to find pages in an art book, or magazine].... or an embroidered look, something antiqued/distressed looking.... laundry subject.... loved fabric... ever seen nice handkerchiefs placed artfully in a frame? or some doilies in each of the frames...
Mirror, why? oh well...Back to Grover's nice wooden wall, and as I thought about your dark wood placed as experiment I thought -- the chalky, medium tone of Grover's seemed better to me because it didn't detract from your stone wall. Is there a reason to add so much contrast? don't think so myself.... ???

Carolyn, you are absolutely right. I don't want anything at all on the stone wall....not sure where that came from. I think someone thought it would just be a nice idea, however I love these walls and see them as a feature that I don't want to cover up. In fact, Im trying to be careful not to distract too much from them. I love them! The finish on the frame is just an oak-coloured wood. Not a honey colour...darker. It looks to me like quarter-cut oak...ill take a closer pic and post

A closeup of the frame would be very helpful. It looks ornate and I'm wondering about a high gloss white finish. But goodness knows I'm likely to think quite differently after seeing a good photo of it.

Hi, have you ever think about some ancien light above your frame. It seems to me that this corner is a little dark. You hang your frame in the middle of the wall upon the sink enlightened by a beautiful light. It will give of course light and warmth in reflection on your beautifull stone wall

Is your floor wood? so does it seem to bring that 'up onto the wall' so to speak? Maybe it depends some on what you put inside it.... well I wonder if you have something tucked away, like I posted.....

the room is great! it may just need a touch of lively personalization such as some books on the shelves? You have four kids? I would consider putting their artwork above the sink. Or maybe some fun photographs?

I realize this post is old to most, but my room still looks the same! Recently we had some boards taken off our barn and replaced. What about barn board above this sink? Would that be too busy?

It would definitely add some dimension if you added reclaimed wood behind the sink. I'm concerned a) what color it is and b) if it will look too busy.

I would bring in some bling with some back splash tile. then I would make sure the art chosen is large enough to bring in the theme you like the most!

Love your laundry room! Think the barn wood would look nice. Replace baskets with matching wicker baskets. Nice picture over sink. Add ceramic candle holders or vases by sink with some color. Add either a paper towel holder to counter or roll up 3 hand towels and place on countertop. Place 3 laundry jars suggested by other poster on one of shelves over dryer(?) In jars add laundry powder, static sheets, powder Clorox, etc. On top shelf place laundry sign, kids art work, or 2-3 knick knacks. Add tub on top of folding table to place missing socks etc. Could add runner if like.

The exposed stone is beautiful and I discourage mixing the tile with the stone. On other design notes listed above, barn wood and art. Consider, barn wood over the sink and a strong piece of art which work in conjunction with the color of the walls.
